VW breakers - Polo engine wanted

Featured Replies

Im trying to find an Engine for a 53 plate Polo 1.2 S, Engine code AZQ

Ive tried all the breakers I know & trawled the net but they apear to be like rocking horse pooh. Does anyone have any recomendations that I may not have tried or know where one might be hiding ??. VW want £1800 for a short engine :eek:, They also dont sell any parts for the engine, probably why they are rare s/hand. Weve sourced some shells from Germany & the rumble from the bottom end is gone but its still not sounding right so Im expecting to have to sort it out shortly & a S/Hand lump may be the way to go

Thanks

Speak to teflonTom as he has rebuilt a good few VW engines and seems to like playing with the smaller VW engines.

hello stuart, i've just looked it up quickly, that's a 1.2 12v, 3 cylinder engine isn't it? if you are going to replace it it does not necesarily have to be the same engine code, quite a lot of engines use the same cylinder block and head but have different external ancillery components hence the different engine code which might mean you can get away with swapping some stuff off your original engine

i'll do a bit of digging about and see what i can come up with

Thanks, & you are correct, its the 3 pot wonder !!!! Weve had loads of problems with it & I gather from the breakers Ive spoken to that it isnt the strongest of engines. The rattle this time the mechanic is convinced is tappet related but we are going to give it a few miles gentle driving to see if the noise changes or gets worse before its dismantled yet again. The car is showing evidence that a previous mechanic who worked on the car probably had a toolbox with various sized hammers. The gearbox lost 5th so it was opened up to reveal fit had been assisted by a blunt instrument in the past so it was £250 for a s/hand box. It had a massive oil leak from the timing cover, once removed the old cover had a split in it which had to be welded up & some of the fixings had previously been assisted out with something like a chisel. I had initially thought of an engine swap & think that might still be the way to go so Im trying to look at the options. Any digging you can do may well give me more affordable options. We bought it at auction as a cat D, light damage, one prevoius owner & 46000 miles as a first car for my son. I think it has a few stories to tell

One of the guys on Mk5GolfGti has one that he is going to swap for a 1.8t in the New Year if that fits with your timescales.

iirc these engines dont have convetional overhead lifters, the cams slide into the end the end of a casting that bolts onto top of the head, they have these little hydraulic adjusters about 1cm in diameter with a 'ball' on the end then there is a set of roller tipped rockers that bear onto the valve stems (and they are very expensive to buy from vw.. this is the same setup as the late lupo/polo 16v engines have although i'm not that hot on the 1.2 engines. if the engine has been run without oil or the oil pressure has been low it wears nice grooves into the roller rockers (had experience of this from a hotted up lupo gti lump), also they need to be re-assembled back in hier orignal fitted positions otherwise the wear is accelerated. a decent engine repair machine shop should be able to re-grind the faces of the rockers, but they dont last long because the hardened heat treated surface is only surface deep

also iirc these engines cannot have the crankshaft removed without damaging the engine block, undoing the main crank journal bearers kind of stretches the webs in the block which alters the running clearance of the bearing shells(this cannot be seen by eye but a measure with an internal micrometer will reveal it) hence no spare internal parts are available except conrods and pistons i believe, conrods can only be bought as a matched set of 3.... :o

Thanks, It may well do, can you mail him my contact details [email protected]

Im going to let him run it for a few more weeks & see what developes, Ive been told by someone who had a similar rattle after the engine was stripped that it went away after a few hundred miles, he assumes its an oil to the tappet problem

All I can add is why do they make a small engine so kin complicated & unserviceable, it really makes little sense in these days of trying to reduce waste.

ebay link

dont know if this is the right one, might be worth emailing the geezer to ask the engine code
