Will VAG.com detect Earthing issues?

Featured Replies

As above.

Basically I've had an aftermarket stereo system in my car since day 4 of it's ownership (from new), but recently I've noticed a fair amount of noise coming through the system when the light switch was on !

I traced this fault to the RCA cables for the stereo running past 'something' causing this electrical noise down the left hand side of the car.

Having moved the cables over to the right, the noise with lights on has gone, but now I have a permanent hiss from the tweeters and slight alternator whine once running.

Never had this before, and I have tried all sort to negate the stereo system being at fault.

Thinking it must be an earth within the cars electrics that is playing up, but don't know how to even begin testing such things systematically.

I also found on here that the aerial can sometimes play up. At the moment it is disconnected from the stereo so should not be receiving any power. I presume this isolates it from the equation, but please tell me if not

Thoughts are welcome.

Cheers,

Thanks Mike. I'll have a look at that later.

But do the later octavias use the K wire?

I know I had to be carefull when I had my 2001 Passat, but thought all this fuss with one wire had long since gone with newer cars.

Mine is an 07 vRS btw.

Sorry mate, can't answer that , all I remember is the specific page on aftermarket audio that I came across by accident on the Ross Tech page. It might be of no use to you at all, but then again.......... it won't hurt to eliminate this possibility.:)

Good luck, post any results you get, as I for one am intrigued on this one now!

Mike

Hi Mike, reading the bottom part of that link suggests it isn't a K wire car, but has a similar issue with CAN bus wiring.

As it has worked for around 30 months and has been on the dealers diagnostic tool I don't think it can be linked directly to the above.

However, all suggestions are welcome and will be explored. :)
