Why not take it back to the dealer?

they checked on 12th october and said wait for 50-100 miles more if noise did not disappear come back .. now booked for 31st of october 2009.

With the car stationary and engine running, does the humming noise alter if you move the steering wheel slowly left and right?

its only coming when driving more than 5-10miles /hr not on Stationary , still its less than a month old.

Could it be wind noise? This was a known problem on the driver's side window (not sure why), though wouldn't expect it at 5mph.

Has your dealer driven it?

Always difficult to make judgements without hearing the noise. Could be a wheel bearing with insufficient lube. These humm as the speed builds and then start to whine as the miles go on. Play will develop in the wheel too. This is not unknown on any make of new vehicle. Had this on a new Nissan Warrior. One rear wheel had bearings (inner and outer) with no grease at all in it! It still took 450 miles to trace the problem before excesive noise and play developed!! Keep checking for wheel play. Could also be a CV joint with insufficient lube or damaged bearing.

If there is a whine which correlates to road speed (and we can rule out the tyres) then you are probably looking at a defective bearing somewhere in the drivetrain.

Ideally the dealer should raise the car and have it running 'wheels free' whilst a technician tries to track down the noise with a stethoscope.

As mentioned, it could be wheel bearing, or diff bearings (CV joints less likely) or some part of the gearbox.

Does the noise change on overrun (i.e. if you coast with foot off the throttle)? Does it change on corners? Information like this would help to narrow it down.

Many thanks for all of you .. my dealer ordered wheel bearings for me hope that they can fix it with them, should be delivered by wednesday .They said its road noise but even after changing tyres i can still hear the humming noise, they checked the wheel bearings and said there is nothing wrong with them. they said if the problem is with the wheel bearings it should be more louder while turning left or right ...

the sound is driving me nuts, so much so that i even went to another skoda dealer, and even they could not pinpoint the exact area where the sound was coming from.

hope it can be sorted by wednesday

I have a 6v 1.2 petrol with a simmilar noise. 4 months and 8k later it has not changed. I can only hear it at low speeds in all gears but it stops if I press down on clutch pedal. will ask garage to have a listen at 1st service. has your problem been resolved?

Did you ever find out what it was

Welcome to the forum.

You would hope they found out what it was since it was 8 1/2 years ago they were asking when the car was new.

It is that long since the member signed in it appears.
