nice looking tow bar for 55 plate superb...

Featured Replies

I want a towbar for my Superb, so I can use a motorcycle trailer on the back from time to time to ferry my motorbike around to various trackdays.

I have been looking on ebay at a few & think the swan neck style looks to best, as I dont like the old skool flange type balls.

I have seen a factory item on there, but am curious about these.

Does anyone have any knowledge of a Skoda supplied standard kit, such as price, part number, pictures?

Many thanks,

Pete.

Hi mate, if you want a towbar that doesnt ruin the looks of the car, theres only one and its the westfalia detatchable, when it is removed there is absolutely no evidence that you have a towbar, even the electric socket swivels up behind the bumber so its not seen and dont get mixed up with the removables where you can still see the mounting braket for the ball assembly, on the Westfalia the mount is also hidden behind the bumper, all you have to do is remove a plastic insert that stops dirst getting in to the mount and then just insert the towball assembly into the mount and it even auto locks, brilliant, I have one on my Superb and my friends at work are that impressed that 3 of them have had them fitted to their cars.

See the pics I posted in this thread,

I ended up getting a Bosal one.

It's a fixed swan neck.

Will try & post some piccies of the fitting this Saturday :)

Cheers,

Pete.

I have the fixed Bosal towbar and it's fine (I bought a Passat one on eBay).

As the Superb is about as well styled as a dustcart, the towbar is the least of my worries. For a heavy trailer, a fixed bar is much stronger as there are no joints to fret. The Superb (manual diesel) is a good towcar though - which is one reason I bought it.

Is it quite straight forward to fit?

The wiring concerns me more than the fitting of the actual tow bar itself.

The towbar is a piece of cake to fit, once the back bumper is off and the crash bar removed. You need to take out the rear light lenses to get at the top bumper bolts. Use an assistant to pull off the bumper because it's big and floppy (have somewhere to put it). Put the crash bar bolts back otherwise you will have a water leak into the boot.

All of the holes for the towbar are there, covered in masking tape and sprayed body colour. Two are through holes requiring nuts (provided in the kit) and two are tapped. To run the cable, there is a blind grommet provided on the RHS which just needs a small hole in it for the 7 core cable. Use sealer here.

For the wiring, I removed the bulb carriers from the rear lamp assemblies and soldered short lengths of wire to the busbars. Then use proper detachable connectors to the 7 core cable. I used a relay for the brake lamps because my big trailer has 4 stoplamps and the VAG stoplamp switches are so crappy. You can source the power for the trailer stoplamps from the back of the power socket.

Finally, it's a good idea to wire up the LH foglamp whilst you're in there. Everything is there including the bulb - you just need a blue link wire. It's a dead easy job - I couldn't believe how much my local VAG dealer wanted to fit it.

Rotodiesel said it all regarding the mounting, but on my part I'd suggest to reconsider flange towbar.

I used to have removable towbar on my Superb, and fitted fixed one after it got drivent into at the traffic lights back in April. Since then, I noticed that the fixed flange towbarr with carrier plate attached keeps the cars further behind me - I guess the drivers do notice, which is exactly the point.

I had 2 cars from new, both got driven into rear, Octavia after only 3 months of ownership. In both cases after unavoidable hard braking. In most cases, the hassle of replacing rear bumper /tailgate/painting is avoidable with the fixed towbar. I still have not recovered the excess from the April crash (in international colissions the insurance can take up to 2 years to refund the excess).

A towbar is much more reliable than the reversing sensors VAG fit.
