Bog standard SE tweaks?

Featured Replies

My (hopefully soon to be delivered 1.4) SE spec Octy doesn't come with many 'toys' and I've ordered nothing additional (beyond a spare wheel, which is of ... limited 'amusement' value).

But now I've perused a few threads here I got thinking. (Dangerous, I know!)

I wondered whether there are any tweaks that the dealer or someone with VAG-COM could add, if I knew to ask for them? Fun features anyone? Or is the SE level just too basic to have any functions that you can play with?

Or alternatively, any annoying aspects to functions that are worth changing (and can be) from 'factory' setting?

Don't know about "fun", but a couple of things.

Things to turn on?

- Daytime running lights if you want them? The manual says this can be done by the indicator stalk but the reality seems to be that on UK-spec cars the feature needs VAGCOM activating, and can then be turned on and off by the stalk. On your SE, without dedicated DRL bulbs, I think it'd just be your dipped lights that are on when ignition is on and light switch at 'off'.

Annoying aspects?

- Some people say seatbelt warning chime, (it beeps once you exceed ~20km/h without drivers seatbelt plugged in). Personally I just wear my seatbelt, seems better that way.

- So called "comfort indicators" which give three flashes. Personally can't see that these are anything other than an annoying feature, unless you want a rude way to say "i'm coming in five seconds, whatever you do or think". On my Elegance I've turned the feature off (using maxidot computer) so my indicators work in a conventional and totally satisfactory manner.

Could be either annoying or desirable:

- anti hijack locking. locks doors when you exceed ~20km/h, unlocks them once you take key out of ignition.

Oh yeah. The manual says you get an audible warning if you exceed 120 kph! Is that enabled for the UK supplied models? Because I imagine that could get a bit irritating. Er ... if one should ever accidentally do such a thing, of course.

You can set the speed warning with Maxi Dot, I bet you will be surely able to edit it with VAG COM, if needed!

HTH,

The car I drove for my test drive had a speed warning exceeded displaying on the maxidot display. Wasn't me, honest :D

The speed warning can be set even without Maxidot.Mine is set at 85.

So that's using the standard trip computer? I didn't realise it did more than basic service intervals and milage covered?

And when it sounds, is it just one *ping* or does it keep going do you know?

Ahem, I tend not to activate it... sorry... ;)

As I have not got my car yet I downloaded the Manual from the main threads page, the info you want is on page 25 (I think)

Thanks. I had a look but the whole section is littered with those little *'s that mean it applies to some models and not others. I'm pretty sure for example that the pictorial door warning option is a Maxidot feature. My level of spec tells you a door is open but there isn't a picture showing you which, one as far as I know.

I guess I'll find out when I get the car if the bleeps annoy me! Some of the features seem useful, others .. less so. Just it'd be handy to know in advance which functions that can't be changed through the 'trip computer' can be 'overridden' by the dealer .

Well it sounds as if the car could be ready to collect at the end of the week. w00t! (Not getting too excited yet - just in case!)

So any last minute tips would be most welcome.

And on a different matter; anyone any views on how competitive Skoda's own insurance prices are? It's not a VRS I'm getting so I don't need a specialist broker.

I just wondered whether anyone here insures through Skoda and if it's any cheaper than other companies?

Ta!
