Engine faults on fabia vrs

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've had a slight problem on my fabia but it seems to have now fixed itself. I'll provide the back story.

I have a fabia vrs and i had the dastek powerplug installed on it. One day i was driving along and i managed to stall the car in third gear. At that point the engine cut out. When i turned the car on again i got a two warning lights

1) the coiled wire (yellow)

2) The engine light (yellow)

I called out the RAC to check and they noted two engine faults

Camshaft position sensor

Engine speed sensor

The guy seemed pretty certain that the car shouldnt work if there was a problem with the engine speed sensor.

I just had the car serviced (inc a timing belt change) so i took the car back to the garage (star performance). Jim noted that the way the chip was installed would cause the camshaft position sensor to fail. The immediate worry was that the chip was causing this. The guys at star couldnt explain the fault codes since the car seemed to be ok, they indicated the chip was most likely the culprit.

So i took it back to Dastek for them to have a look. They doubted it was the chip, but erring on the side i caution i had the chip removed. They cleared the fault codes (charged me for it) and i havent had any problems since. My intention is to put the chip back in after about a thousand miles (driven about 400 so far) to indicate if it is the chip. Just to confirm the car drove fine with the engine warning lights. I have noticed the car starts a lot easier now having the chip removed (not sure if that helps)

I'm a bit worried that there is something wrong with the car/chip, but not being very car savvy im not sure.

If anyone could provide some insight it would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Callum

If you stall the car in a higher gear it can sometimes leave cam/crank pos sensor faults, i would doubt there is an underlying fault with your vehicle:thumbup:

i wouldn't bother putting the chip back in either, especially as it starts easier without it , you don't want difficult starting with the cold weather coming up

I wish you would point out that it WAS NOT STAR PERFORMANCE that did the chipping

Had to read it again to be sure it was DASTEC that did it and when the chip was removed the car was fine

Thanks for the advice.

Since im now driving the car on a daily basis ill leave the chip out. The last thing i need is for the car not to start properly.

The guys from dastek mentioned that the fault codes can reset themselves if the error(s) don't come back after a certain length of time. I'm in two minds about this as

1) it could be a valid fault

2) it costs to have the codes reset (if they reset for free it shouldnt be a problem)

Next time this happens ill just call out the AA then take it from there.

Cheers
