Windows Update issue......

Featured Replies

Just recently i decided to do a system restore on my dell dimension e521running xp as things were getting a bit slow...... I downloaded service pack 3 ready to install before i went back online. Everything seemed to go fine, and everything is running nice and quick again now - though i do think my blackberry desktop software is causing things to load slowly on startup, it was fine until i put that back on.

I do however have one weird issue that i cannot figure out.........

Every single time i switch the computer on the little yellow windows update shield appears in the right side of the task bar, at first i paid it no mind and left it to do it's thing, installing the updates on shut down...... However, a couple of days ago i decided to look what the updates were as it seemed odd that i was getting them every day..... The update was

'update for windows xp (KB967715)' Install this update to resolve an issue in which AutoRun features were not correctly disabled.
so, fine i thought, i'll install that..... next day turn the computer on, and as usual, there is another update! so i take another look what it is and it is the same update again! (KB967715) - I installed it once again and carried on........ next time i turn the computer, yeah you guessed it, another update, the same one..... i'm getting this every day/time i switch the computer on i do not seem to get any other updates, just this one, over and over!

Whats going on? what can i do about it?

If somebody has any ideas i'd much appreciate some help.

cheers

Cheers.... This looks likely to be what is causing the problem then:

Known issues with this security update

Update 967715 is reoffered multiple times

Update 967715 may be reoffered if the HonorAutorunSetting registry setting that is described in this article is not added to the registry hive. This issue may occur if some other program that is installed on the computer blocks the update from writing the registry entry. Such software may block the update during the installation of the update or may remove the registry entry after the computer is restarted.

To resolve this problem, install the update in safe mode. To do this, follow these steps:

Download the update. To do this, follow these steps:

Visit the Microsoft Download Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads)

In the Search for a download box, type the number of the Knowledge Base article that describes the update, and then click Go.

Download the update, and then save it to the desktop.

Install the update. To do this, follow these steps:

Double-click the downloaded file to install it.

If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

Visit the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web site to determine whether the update is offered again. If you are offered the update again, continue to the next step.

Install the update in safe mode. Safe mode disables most running processes and services. These services include the Windows Update service. Installing an update in safe mode is a quick test to determine whether an application or process is interfering with the installation. To install the update in safe mode, follow these steps:

Restart the computer.

As the computer starts, press the F8 key.

Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.

Double-click the file that you downloaded in step 1 to install the file.

When the installation is complete, restart the computer.

Visit the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web site to determine whether the update is offered. Or, wait until Automatic Updates runs again.

I'll give it a go tonight.......
