To all those with Cold Air Induction kits :wavey:

Now that winter is nearly upon us, are you planning to keep your pipes and aftermarket filters in place. Or will you swap back to the standard airbox until spring ?

I'd never given it a single moments thought until driving back home the other night in driving rain. For some reason the turbo wouldn't spin up like normal and the car felt like it was just a 1.8 20v. Once I got home I let the car cool down, stopped it... waited a bit and then went for another spin to test it. All was back to normal phew

I don't know whether this had anything to do with the cold weather or the rain... but it did make me have a think.

the colder the better so it wasn't the temperature and you would need to submerse the front of the car to get enough water in.

Although it would be tough to suck in enough water to do damage - my filter is metal and has rusted to **** with all last years salt and snow and crap on the roads! What would i do differently this year? Probably nothing as i'm too lazy but if could be bothered the ABD kit comes with an adaptor so that you can run the kit in the engine bay rather than on the LAN pipe - dont know if the carbonio comes with the same?

i dont know how far the Carbonio or ABD kits sit the filter into the bumper but i wouldnt have thought it was low enough for the filter to be affected by water intake unless obviously submerged in a flood or something. i'm not saying this didnt cause the problem you had though.

might be worth popping the filter off to see how wet it is the next time this happens.

On a standard Octavia RS, what depth of flood water do you reakon you could go into before you'd start getting worried. Whats the most important things to be careful of.

The water level would have to be at the filter level.

If you keep the filter tooked away down below the front head light, I would take the precaution of blocking off the left grille vent below the bumper. If you haven't drilled this and it is totally standard then no need as there is only about 4 of the diamond recesses pressed out. If you have drilled it, it is probably sensible to block the grille with a backing plate cut to fit out of a bit of sheet aluminium or similar.

My worst flooding fears were (funnily enough) in the summer, not winter, when holidaying in the lake district and have not suffered any mishap.

Mines totally standard, would I be right in saying that I'd get away with driving through flood water up to half way on the front bumper ? :eek: . Is there anything else to be careful of going through floods ?

I've found no adverse effects with the CAI and I went through some very big puddles this weekend round the back lanes of Northampton.

I have run CAI kits on various cars for high miles all year round with no problems at all. The Focus 1.8zetec I have has been running a foam filter, followed by a Pipercross Viper, then back to the foam since buying the car brand new nearly 5 years ago now.

Octy will run the filter all year round too

Was speaking to a chappy who should (judging by the reputation of his company) know yesterday and he reckons that a bit of water getting through the filter on a petro-engined car is no real issue. However running a diesel with potential for a wet filter can cause all sorts of misery.... Has anyone put one of these types of induction kits on a Fabia vRS yet (I don't know if anything is available mind)? If so be careful.
