Sat Nav virgin - is now a good time to buy?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm a sat nav virgin, I've held out this long with a map and SWMBO reading it

But prices appear to be dropping and I see I can pick up a Garmin Nuvi 205 for £60 on Amazon (refurbished). I'm thinking this could be just the job for the new Octy when it finally arrives

So is now a good time to buy my first sat nav or is the bottom just about to fall out of the market with free google sat nav?

I don't have a fancy phone nor live in a 3G area so a free phone based solution wouldn't help me anyway unless it drives down the price of conventional units.

They'll always bring out newer versions and drop the prices of the previous models but not all sat navs are equal!

I see you must have been having a read about the Android version that is coming out soon but obviously that's a no go at the moment so I can comment about sat navs I've had before or seen in use. I wouldn't go for either the Navman or Garmin as they don't appear to work as good as a TomTom IMHO.

It's usually minor things that annoy me with the N&G when the T has a better way of doing the same thing.

Try Halfords or Comet to compare before you buy is the best suggestion I can give....

Thanks. From the reviews I've read the TomTom One and Garmin Nuvi come out about equal so those are the two on my shortlist. The Garmin is also significantly cheaper (on Amazon), but like you say I guess I really should try before I buy :)

I'd always say Tom Tom -but if you're thinking about a new mobile this may be of interest.

Asda stores had some recently (stocks no doubt very limited, especially now). Myguide 4228 4.3" screen £30, 3218 3.5" screen £20, both can be fiddled with to install tomtom, igo8 and igo amigo (Details on the net). It's naughty, but cheap. At face value Igo Amigo's display and interface is better than a tomtom IMO, but not sure what models come with this software installed. The absolute cheapest (like the previously mentioned myguides) have very poor software on called TurboDog which is not very good at all.

I loved the Garmin that was built into my Kenwood unit in my Octavia. And I hate using SWMBO's TomTom.

Garmin ftw :)
