steering rattle

Featured Replies

Hi, we have our roomster for two years now and its very reliable. I have taken it for its second service and asked the dealer to check a clunking noise in the steering. Has anyone else noticed that if you push the front wheels there is movement (half to 1 inch) backwards when parked on driveway. I asked our dealer about this but he made no comment about it. I have had it checked twice at the dealer but the movement is still there. My question is, is this normal on all roomsters, has anyone noticed it?

I don't have a clunk but my steering is making a clicking noise when I am turning right.

It's in for a service on Tuesday so will get it checked out then.

Anyone else had this problem?

Nope neither.

Car is still fault free after 58k.

Yes - I have.

Dealer has suggested fault on the droplink ( with out me prompting any more information ) might be a common fault ?

The are not a great design to be honest, but speaking as someone who had several go on my VRS (Which should be the roughly same) you wont get a rattle more sort of a clunking over bumps

Thanks for the replies guys, Andybond what is a droplink and can it be replaced?

First of all I would like to say I am happy with my roomster and it hasn't given any problems. Despite the rattling noise in the steering it doesn't seem to affect the handling of the car or wear tyres or anything. It wasn't there for the first 15,000km, now 25,000km after 2 years.

As I said earlier I have taken it for second service and the dealer said he changed 'worn bushings' in the front and this was the rattling noise in the steering. However it is still there depite being back to the garage again. I love my roomster especially the high sitting position, great for manoevering/parking but I wonder what will happen with higher mileage!

Thanks for the feedback.

Has the "movement backwards" you originally mentioned gone? Not sure what this is - assuming it's not creep or wind-up against the handbrake and that it is definitely in the suspension or steering (is it perhaps movement inwards rather than backwards?) it sounds excessive to me and whilst any noise needs investigating personally I would not want to use the car until this "play" is properly sorted.

Presume you're using a Skoda dealer? Worth a second opinion perhaps?

Ours has done 20k miles (over 30k km) in 2 years without any similar probs. in spite of the increasingly poor state of the UK roads.

What’s the symptoms?

A kind of irritating rattle over rough surfaces but no noise at all on smooth surfaces. Always there but doesn’t seem to get worse

Its part of the suspension , its cheap ( ish ! ) to change / fix as well

The droplink is the connecting rod that ties the anti roll bar to suspension strut

Just had a wheel bearing changed on my 07 22k roomster FOC under warrenty

Hi again guys for your replies.

Vroomster, the movement is back wards and a little inwards too. I have taken it to the skoada dealer only. We had a friend who knows a bit about cars have a look and he suggests the back bushing on the bottom arm which I think was replaced is inadequate ie it deforms and the wheel can be moved backwards. (it needs a more rigid bushing, I think)

Would this cause damage if it is not changed? This will be the third trip back again!

Andy bond, the knocking noise is audible on smooth tarmac driveway especially on turning.

Thank you for your time

Hi guys

Just to add I'm taking the car back again and I'll post up the results so that others will know what to look out for if they have similar problem.

You may or may not have noticed that the 'rattle' occurs at low temperatures only - specifically, below about 10degC. Above this, the noise is very much diminished and not noticable at higher ambient temperature. Also, it may have nothing to do with turning - do you hear the same noise, for example, going over an uneven surface (eg a speed hump) moving straight ahead at very low speed?

If yes to the above, see my previous postings related to this from 1 year ago.

This is Exactly the same with my Roomster 3. It has been in to dealer twice to get it sorted. First time they replaced both droplinks and an osf strut top bearing. Next morning (cold) it was back! The noise does go away as it gets less cold.

My warranty runs out in April and would like it sorted by then!

Looked for your posting "First time skoda" but couldnt see it. could you please let me know what it is as Its an annoying fault!

son - there is a clear issue on the steering rattle - confirmed by myself again, given the wide temperature ranges we've been experiencing recently. My observations:

Below 12oC, there is a clacking/rattle from the front suspension - mines is worse on the n/s but also evident from the o/s; above 12oC, the noise is eliminated completely; I've owned the car from new and the problem manifested itself in the Dec following Sept delivery (ie when the cold weather arrived). Supplying dealer confirmed the problem and tried various things - new steering racks (x3), dismantled interior to check for loose trim/components - I got fed up and tried another dealer - they changed the front bushes but this made no difference. I am STILL waiting to hear from Skoda Area Technical Manager - but don't expect a response. The clacking is still evident at low ambient temperature - going slowly over an uneven surface or over a speed bump etc - doesn't matter if the shocks are under compression or extension - noise is still there.

My thoughts - metal contracts quite a bit over the temperature range concerned - I suspect some metallic part of the suspension or steering is contracting, resulting is free-play. It's bloody annoying. This, together with the other problems I've encountered, have done nothing for my faith in Skoda - I will change the vehicle at some point within the 3yr warranty period. Good luck and let me know what happens!

Had this on my Fabia 3 too, took it to the dealer, who claimed they couldn't replicate the fault, which was complete tosh since turning into their forecourt it was clunking away. They said there was no problem with anything, but 'modified' the bushes to be sure. Problem now less common, but still there when taking tighter corners. Gonna try a different dealership when I get the time to book it in. It might just be me, but the car doesn't feel as secure in the corners as it used to, somethings amiss for sure.

our 57 plate 1.4 Tdi 17k just feels generally 'loose' in the steering dept - nothing wrong, but feels like it needs more damping/tightness at each end of the steering lock...
