Can't just get it fitted as I suspect the change in exhaust note will be noticed!!

Edit: Must get that skirting painted

Rub some black engine bay gunk all over it and say it was a $20 NZ Ebay bargain?! :D

You've done this before :D

Not had to before, but for that bit of kit which will be grubby in no time, no harm in trying it. Also, butcher up the box a bit so it looks like it's been opened more than once. ;)

Looks somewhat less restrictive than:

And shinier :D

What are emissions regs over there like?

What are emissions regs over there like?

The WOF (MOT) inspector looks at the fumes from the tailpipe and if he thinks it's too smoky it fails. Seriously!

There's no emissions testing

And it's taken you FOUR years to decat the thing?!

PS: Happy 4th anniversary of NZ'ship (that a word?)

If that bulge in the pipe isn't a cat, then is it just a resonator?

Yep - just had a look in the pipe and it's a resonator.

Getting it fitted in the morning.

Don't fancy tackling those rusty nuts!

Will this throw any warning lights up Rob ?

  • Author

Probably yes.

I just switched to an STS map from Shark Performance and Ben has mapped out the error code for the CAT, so no CEL for me.

There are angled blocks available to distance the second O2 sensor from the pipe and fool the ECU

Looks good.

The way to spin it is that the original cat was broken ;) and this is a much cheaper option to repair it ;)

When telling her the news though I'd leave out the winks, they kind of ruin the effect :P

Mmm, well, the resonator in my downpipe has failed. I get a nasty rattle from it now :(

So it lasted nearly a year!

Have been offered a Milltek one from a local supplier for $460 - about 240 quid. Or I can try and get it fixed somewhere.

Problem is there aren't that many places that do stainless here because they don't salt the roads in winter so stainless ones aren't really needed.

What the score with this de cat thing?

Some say that you cant unless youve got a highbred turbo, due to less back pressure and the thin over spoiling and some say "ive had it on my car for years with no issues" lol

I was going to do the same with my 130pd but didnt want to kill anything !

diesel cars dont need cats mate

rob just get rid of the resonator and have it straight through B)

Rob I have the same Decat as you by the look of it. Mine is still going strong although i do get a slight touch on some excelerating through gears. My Powerflex dogbone mounts may need replacing.

I would just weld in a straight through section as Clive states.

I think I've found a local place that can weld stainless - will go see them today.

Only issue is that mine has the connection for the second lambda in the resonator so they'll have to do something funky there :D

If there competent at stainless welding they should be able to open it up and take the resonator out then weld yours back up without the need for putting another piece of pipe in

Yeah i know that, as there is no emissons test on them but if you remove the cat or say an another centre box it crates less abck preasure which make the turbo over spool which on a standard turbo can be an issue as to wearing the thing out too quickly due to axle loads and bearing failure.

So..........................................Doe s it matter if you remove it or not on a standard turbo?
