VRS elecric windows wont work!!

Featured Replies

Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on this one!! my son has a VRS (05) plate and just randomly the electric windows have stopped working. Worked the day before, dont work anymore? Have had a vagcom tester on it recently and had fault codes cleared but other than that nothing else.....was wondering if the vagcom software has done something or maybe that was coincidence?? any suggestions truly appreciated....also still got my fabia 1.9tdi with major starting problems, going in the garage weds as hubby has run out of ideas, had that on the vagcom too and no faults showing relating to starting problems, tho it seems there is no power getting to the glowplugs. Reckon thats gonna cost me next week.......

The fuses for both windows (25A) and the smaller 5A fuse are all fine.

The door buttons do nothing at all, no sounds of the window motors trying to go.

The windows will not operate by holding the key turned in the lock.

The windows will not operate by the key fob.

Since they've both gone at the same time, we're thinking maybe that the 'Electrical system control unit' or the 'Central convenience module' is at fault. I'm having a hard time finding out where exactly either of these are located though so far. Can anyone point us in the right direction?

We're looking at Diagram 7 here (we have a book which has this same diagram) : http://www.freeweb.hu/inhouse/elektronika/Skoda_Fabia_1.2_2004.pdf - #10 Electrical system control unit and #70 Drivers door control unit

There are no other problems other than the windows not working! Everything else (central locking etc) is absolutely fine.

Thanks.

Since you have access to VAG-COM, you might want to connect it, open the central convenience controller, and use measuring blocks to check the window switch inputs.

We have done this and compared with the other 1.9 Elegance we have.

Mine are all saying something like "Cont. Module" on the switch input fields, and do not change. The switch input field for the electric mirrors are also saying this though and it doesn't seem to change when moving them, and they are working just fine.... so that doesn't really tell me much unfortunately :(

We've also tried disconnecting the battery and relevant fuses for 5 minutes. No joy.

Do they change OK on the working car then?

it seems there is no power getting to the glowplugs.

The glowplug wiring loom is quite a common failure point.

They do indeed. The Elegance fields switch to "Auto Close", "Manual Close" etc, when you press the window buttons

Thanks! Which specific part of the loom are you talking about though? The rail where the wiring loom connects to the glow plugs?

Have you tried running output tests and see if the windows close then? If they do it would suggest a faulty switch or missing feed to the switch. If not, maybe the Convenience ECU?

It is connected in the engine bay and goes to the plugs, yes.

Have a look here at TDIClub.

Great stuff. We've been battling with that cars problems for ages. We will have to check that one out! Will let you know the findings.

The windows are (fortunately) fully closed in their broken state. If the output tests have a close / open window test then I will have to give that a go.

Still a bit confused as to where the convenience module is located. We were looking around behind the dash for electric window relays (which we later found apparently don't exist). We thought maybe this module was also supposed to be there. Is it inside the drivers door panel?

Sorry, I don't know :o. I think there's some sort of control module in the door. Anyone know for sure?

The convenience unit is located next to the clutch pedal and is not nice to remove. Have you tried disconnecting/reconnecting the battery, as it will re-boot the convenience unit.

Yep ;) Disconnecting the battery and / or fuse didn't do anything. Whatever the cause of this one is, it seems like it's not going to be fixed by any of the simpler solutions unfortunately :-(

We'll have to check inside the door panel I guess, failing that try and get at this (in)convenience module down by the clutch pedal... and failing that, does anyone have any idea what this 'Electrical system control unit' mentioned earlier is, and where we might find it?

I have discovered something a little bizarre.

Here's #46 for the Elegance (all electric windows):

Address 46: Central Conv. Labels: 6Q0-959-433.lbl

Part No: 6Q0 959 433 C

Component: 0J Komfortgerát 0003

Coding: 00258

Shop #: WSC 13765

Part No: 6Q2959802

Component: 0J Tõrsteuer.FS TFK 0002

Part No: 6Q2959801

Component: 0J Tõrsteuer.BF TFK 0002

Part No: 6Q0959811

Component: 0J Tõrsteuer.HL TFK 0002

Part No: 6Q0959812

Component: 0J Tõrsteuer.HR TFK 0002

No fault code found.

I assume the 4 slave parts here are the individual door controllers, and also note the coding is 00258, which is for 4 electric windows.

However, my vRS is showing this:

Address 46: Central Conv. Labels: 6Q0-959-433.lbl

Part No: 6Q0 959 433 E

Component: 60 Komfortgerát 0002

Coding: 00018

Shop #: WSC 13765

No fault code found.

I seem to have no slave door controllers, and the coding thinks it has no electric windows!! I have tried recoding to 00066 (2 electric windows, 4 doors) with no luck. I will have to go back out there and see if, after this change, the two door controllers have reappeared.

On page 14/17 http://www.skodafabiaclub.com/technikaiinfok/muszaki_leirasok/SSP_032_3.pdf it seems that if it was anything to do with this 'Electrical system control unit', then the electric wing mirrors wouldn't adjust either.... and they are still working fine... I guess if my door controllers aren't there it would seem like something (the vag com?) has taken out *both* door controllers at the same time (surely not?!?!)!

Forgive me if I've missed it, but, have you tried simply taking the door switch from the Elegance and putting it in the VRs? They are identical and just need a gentle lever out with a flat blade screwdriver. The contacts get worn/dirty and give funny results because there's nothing 'wrong' with them.

Hi,

I would be very surprised if it was the door switches for a few reasons.

- The windows do not work via the key fob.

- The windows do not work by manually putting the key in the lock and holding the turn for 3 seconds.

- The passenger side switch doesn't work either, which would suggest both the drivers and passenger side switches went at the same time. Seems highly unlikely!

The windows are dead-as-a-dodo. No fault codes. Nothing. There doesn't seem to be any output tests for the windows either :(

Further research suggests the circuit is slightly different for the vRS. The door controllers are not on a CAN-BUS (like the elegance, which shows all 4), but on some 1 wire LIN-BUS. It's supposed to be coded as 00018, and the door controllers won't be shown. Useful....

The convenience module seems ok. I coded to 00017 to disable the selective locking and that worked fine (and I prefer it a single click to unlock all actually).

It would seem that both door controllers are dead. Which seems unlikely too. Perhaps they share a common power supply / wire somewhere for this LIN-BUS which has died or detached itself.

The Fabia 1.9 with the problems starting, the garage found a hair line crack in a fuse under the bonnet, which we hope has been the cause of all of the funny issues we've been seeing. We'll find out in the morning! With any luck it'll start instantly.

The vRS with dead windows .... well, I gave up after the battery had been disconnected overnight a couple of days a go and they still weren't playing come morning time. This morning I got in the car, not having touched it for a couple of days (still driving it about though), and the windows are working absolutely fine again!! Completely mental.

  • 3 months later...
  • 3 weeks later...

Just to let anyone with the same problem know... I had the windows checked out at a local Simpsons garage a week a go (didn't need the windows during winter really!). They fitted a new drivers side motor and all is well again :-)

Seems the drivers side door is leaking water in, so perhaps that's what's killed it. Have ordered new outside window trim bits all around, so hopefully that'll fix that one.
