Reverse Sensor woes

Featured Replies

Last week my reverse sensor system let out a long and anguished beep when I first put her into reverse (nothing remotely near my rear bumper). Since then there is no audible indication at all.

Plugged in my Vag-Com today and it cannot find '76 Parking assist' module.

Now I am assuming that is the reason why it no longer beeps (control module is cream crackered).

Looking at the fuse list the audible sounder is on a fuse common to most of my instrument panel (which work) and I can't see a reference to a fuse for the control module.

Anyone know if it has a fuse, where it is, anything else I could check?

The only other fault in memory (which wouldn't clear) was a loss of comms to the J538 fuel control module. Anyone know how serious this is? Car starts and drives fine.

I would look at the problem being a faulty sensor. These usually send a long beep out when one goes duff - and they are prone to regularly. I have had 4 changed in 3 yrs. I also have VAGCOM - but could not detect anything on that when I had problems - although I really am a novice when using it.

I had the same thing with mine a couple of months ago, I got hold of a brand new sensor and started at the passenger side and replaced it with the new one. made no difference so the one I took of I presumed was OK so changed that with next one across rather than keep moving the new one. It turned out to be the third one I changed as the long beep went and "touch wood" there still working fine.

I was also able to replace them without removing the bumper as there is just enough room to get to them from underneath although I did need a bit of light from a maglite so I could see how to unclip them.

The drivers side sensor is behind a plastic trim which will need removing first but it's only a couple of torx screws and a few 6mm nuts so shouldnt be a problem, fortunately I didnt have to remove that. took about 10mins from start to finish to get them working again. cheaper and quicker than the stealers!!!!

Thanks for the replies guys.

I think a duff sensor started my problems but the issue now is that there is no audible noise at all and Vag-Com cannot connect to the parking assist module. This leads me to believe that the control module is faulty.

Anyone know where it is, if it's fused?

I thought id mention that the reverse sensor beep has also packed up on my superb today! Fortunately its still under warranty so a phone call on monday will see the car booked in and get it sorted...my wife isnt the best of drivers in reverse. And now that the beep is non functioning, i want it sorted sooner rather than later.

Incidentally, des anyone knowhow much these sensors cost?

SuperbOne, i would assume all the electronic gadgetry is located either in the boot (obvious place ) or knowing how the superb was made probably in the engine compartment knowing my luck....but i would think its near the fusebox and relays.....under the drivers footwell.....so a back breaking job to do unless you can work hapilly upside down! hope you get it fixed and let us know if you find it.....kind regards andy

The module is in the boot behind the left hand boot trim (side with the 12v supply). Easy to remove and module about £90 to replace. check the sensors first though.

Regards

Incidentally, does anyone know how much these sensors cost?

Unfortunately to say as it's a VAG part so as you would expect it's not cheap, £70ish not cheap which is rediculous when you consider you can buy a retro fit kit for about £40 complete!

Also the control box is situated on the drivers side of the boot, remove the wall carpet and fixed on to the the metal work that comes of the wheel arch you will see the control box more or less where the 12V auxillary is.

I found this as I wired a key switch in to the neutral of the control box so I could disable the sensors when reversing whilst hooked up to my caravan, worked a treat and saved me a fortune on the extra cost the towbar fitters wanted to charge.

i did a quick check on the sensors on rear bumper today with my 9yr old daughter swtiching the ignition on/off as i told her how it was to be done.....yes i do trust her...anyway, i wear a hearing aid, and can hear the high pitch beeps when reverse was switched on...and found the noise coming from the rear upper led brake light....is this correct? as i scanned the boot, and the beep when reverse is selected, wasnt very loud...and when i returned to the led brake light, the beep was very pronounced.

I did check sensors but there is no power going to them,so i am now assuming the control box is suspect....will call dealers 1st thing tomorrow and arrange to get this annoying problem sorted...will keep you posted.....regards andy

I thought the 'Park assist' controller listed in vag com referred to the park assist system which is an option in the superb II (where it parks itself). I would be surprised if the parking sensors on a Mk1 are sophisticated enough to have vag-com access?

Well,She's been at the Skoda dealer for 2 days and because no fault is showing on the diagnostics they cannot find what is wrong! The rear sensors aren't working....... control unit or sensorSo they have to wait for Skoda to tell them what to check next which could take a week.Spanner monkeys are NOT what they used to be (i.e able to daignose and fix faults)

yep, when was the last time you heard staff at a main dealer refer to a grease monkey as a "mechanic"? These days they're all "fitters".

Got the car back today.

Wasn't too impressed with the 2 different replies from the service desk.

1) We've contacted Skoda to ask for advice on what to do next as there are no faults in the computer.

2) We won't contact Skoda until we've looked at the computer and read the fault memory.

So service department nil (common sense or brain cells)

Turned out it was a wiring fault.... How can wiring go faulty when all that happened was a heavy downpour??

Anyhoo all fixed and beeping at me when I reverse again! :D

1 week later and they've pack up again.

I wondered how a wiring fault suddenly happened after a heavy downpour.

This current lack of workingness (if that's a word!) was after the recent snowy weather.

Either it's a seriously poor design or bad/wrong diagnosis from the stealer.

Looks like they'll be having her back for more work!!!

Snowy back window + no reverse sensors = costly mishaps.

I have had 4 sensors fitted in 2yrs - all different ones (so a new set on now). I think they are a crap design but unfortunately they are the ones fitted to the car. I bet you have a sensor issue?

Good luck and Merry Xmas.

They can be accessed in Vag-Com because one of my front ones went today. Got the 3 second beep out of the sensors then the flashing amber / green on the button to switch them off. Plugged in my VCDS and it found that front right sensor 2 is dead. I will dig out the info later, off to bed now and can't be bothered firing the laptop up :)

Mine stopped working intermittently when it rained then after a period of dry wheather they started working again. Then in during october they packed up completely and havent worked since. I didnt bother replacing them. During the past week while theres been the below 0 temperatures theyve started working again. Ive not taken one off so dont know what they look like but could it be that they arent sealed properly and allow water in, and if so would it be worth drying them out and sealing them up with silicone.

Can you tell me what modue you need to connect to in Vag-Com, I looked through them all but could not find the module to then clear the fault!!

my car does this too, usually only on start up...but has lately been doing it most times i go to reverse. it probably hasnt helped that i got ran into the back of (all be it slowly in a car park) the other week. probably damaged something though.

it lets out a long long beep

but then seems to function as normal. i got my gf to put her hand close to each sensor to test and it seems that while they all work, some work better than others which is a bit worrying

Here is the fault code mine logged, Mk1 2008 2.5 V6 TDi Tip

----

Address 76: Park Assist Labels: None

Part No: 3U0 919 283 B

Component: Einparkhilfe V003

Coding: 01114

Shop #: WSC 73430

1 Fault Found:

01626 - Sensor for Parking-Aid; Front Right (G252)

03-00 - No Signal

Do you have front parking sensors fitted then??

Do you have front parking sensors fitted then??

Yes mate, mine is one of the last of the Mk1's and in L&K flavour, the original owner (1 previous) had them as a factory fit option, the only thing not on the car from the build / options list is a sunroof. I find them quiet useful for parking in certain places where I want to get it's big nose tucked in as safely as possible whilst not leaving it's fat arse out in the street :)

You jammy begger - just jealous really!! I know what you mean about parking though.
