MOTs and the scrappage scheme

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I currently have an order in on the scrappage scheme. Estimated delivery at the time of the order was 1st Dec, but it's now looking more like late Dec/Jan with a build week 49.

The MOT on my banger runs out 8th Dec and when doing the deal I said ideally I'd like the car before then so I wouldn't have to put my banger through another MOT. The salesman offered that if my car was delayed beyond 8th Dec that he'd lend me a car until mine was ready so I wouldn't have to put it through another MOT, which is now looking likely.

I'm just wondering what the conditions are for the scrappage scheme wrt MOT's in the event of a delayed order. At what point does the MOT have to be current/valid? Also, as we're looking like late Dec at the earliest, I'm wondering where I'd stand on a 2010 (Jan) registration given my MOT has expired in Dec?

One final query regarding Jan registrations - do dealers open on New Year's Day and can they register car's on 1st Jan for collection, or do you have to wait a bit longer?

Thanks :)

Apologies, the MOT question was easily answered by visiting the Government's scrappage website:

The vehicle you are trading in must:

  • be a car or small van weighing up to 3,500 kilograms (kg)
  • be registered in United Kingdom on or before 29 February 2000 (cars) or 28 February 2002 (vans) (vehicle categories M1 and N1 respectively)
  • be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) in your name
  • have been registered to you continuously for 12 calendar months before the order date of the new vehicle
  • have a UK address on the registration certificate (V5C)
  • have a current MOT test certificate before date of order for the new vehicle (or that has expired no more than 14 days before the time of order)
  • have a current tax disc when the order for the new vehicle is placed (or that has 14 days before the time of order)
  • be insured when the order for the new vehicle is placed
