Network file tranfer help!

Featured Replies

Morning All

I have an old laptop with broken screen that i will be butchering into a 19" digital photo frame with the use of a spare LCD monitor.

However all the pictures currently located on the new laptop and i'm not sure of the easiest and fastest way of transfering (and backing up) all the pictures across to the old machine.

Was planning on copying all the pictures to an external HDD, then pasting them all over to the old lappy but with many GB's of pictures it could take days!

Both machines are wireless and both have network cable ports.

If i connect the 2 machines with a network cable do they not just recognise each other and allow me to swap files between the two??

Any help gratefully received

Personally, the external HDD would be the method of choice, just as it's easier, although maybe slower than the caddy method.

RE the network, that will likely be slower than the external HDD, espeacilly via wifi.

With the network, what sort of cable is it you have? A crossover, or a straight through? Are they the same OS (and workgroup?).

Thanks Both

I just gave in and used the external HDD.

Didn't actually take as long as i thought it would

40GB of photo's to the hard drive in about an hour then about a third of those to the old lap top in about 45 minutes

Sorted now though
