GAP/Asset Protection Insurance

Featured Replies

Has anyone any experience of this ?

Been quoted £295 for 3 years return to invoice value.

Any pitfalls/things to look out for ?

Thanks

Few points to consider..............

- Does it cover the factory fitted extras (normally they do).

- Does it cover dealer fitted extras?(Normally they don't).

- All the ones I've looked at will exclude the car if you make any further modifications other than towbar and maybe alloys. Any kind of engine/handling/appearance/brake mods will exclude the car and you'll get nowt.

- You won't get back unused road tax, insurance excess or any extra warranty costs.

- What is the limit of cover? Read the small print the policies sold by dealers are normally cr*p, with a limit of about £5000 and you won't get all your money back.

- Check your car insurance - does it have new for old cover? Often 12 months cover is included in the price of your car insurance, that can reduce the price of GAP insurance.

- £295 is a p*ss take for RTI price. You'll probably only need £10,000 of cover for the first 3 years go here Gap Insurance by Click4Gap you'll get it for about £150

- £295 will pay for 3 years new for old replacement

i got quoted 400 notes and i dont even think that was for 3 years....i just think its another way to blag you....as said earlier the money would pay for new for old

Like all insurance, it's cost is more than you'd expect to pay, on average, if you didn't bother.

Some insurance, like this one, has pretty high commission - eg your typical hire purchase protection gives 60-80% to the salesman - this will be at least 30% so it will be pushed at you.

It all depends how much money you have spare - if one problem will mean you get kicked out on the street it might be worthwhile for the peace of mind - but, for me, I'd laugh and walk away (but then years of leading a boring sanitary life means I have enough savings to cope with a loss).

Ian ps I work in insurance and know the score. Do I get 5% commission as an adviser?

£200-£250 is about right for RTI cover.

Have a quick shop round online.

I've never bothered myself, but I believe there are some good deals to be had by going direct rather than letting the dealer make a hefty commission!

A quick google brings up http://cargapinsurance.co.uk/gap_single_policy.asp - you can customise policies to get the cover you want. Plenty of other sites out there.

Bandit - Let us know how the price you get on these sites compares with the quote you already have - it would be good to know for future reference
