Wipers with a mind of their own

Featured Replies

Thought I would ask on here before taking the car apart. The front wipers on my 98 Octavia keep running even if I have pressed down for one wipe. They can also run for a few seconds or a few minutes in intermittent or wash/wipe. does anyone know which is likely to be the cause, the switch/arm unit, the wiper motor unit or a rely unit if there is one. Thanks in advance, WW

Sounds like a relay to me

I have a similar problem with my rear wiper, when i turn it off it still keeps going! :S

Thought it was a bit strange yesterday when I didn't get any results when I searched "wipers". Must have been the server problems as I had over 400 results today.

I still had the problem after cleaning the relay contacts so I completely stripped the wiper arm pivot assemblies and couldn't believe how seized they were.

After removing the rust, lubricating and refitting to the car the wipers now stop after one wipe on a downward press and two wipes when using the wash function. This may be a coincidence and the problem is still there but the noise that the arms were making has now gone if nothing else.

I will let you know if it is resolved.

Thanks for the help

WW
