Drying out...

Featured Replies

I've just had my back doors resealed by my local dealer. They dried the carpets out 'as much as possible in a cold, damp workshop'. However, yesterday I found the carpets were still sopping wet. I don't know if they haven't sealed the doors properly, or whether it's just residual dampness. Anyone know a good way of drying out the carpets thoroughly?

Unfortunately, as you have found out, Cr@p time of year for drying the interior out !!

Best way would be to lift the rear carpets, Sponge out the excess from the footwell/sound deadening & then dry with a Hair dryer/Heater..Chances of a good day to leave the Doors open is slim next to none ...

Use a vax (or similar) to vac up all the water out of the carpet, to do this properly the carpet will need to be lifted so you can also vac the sound proofing felt (this is where most of the water will be, then use a heat gun (or a hair dryer) to heat the felt and carpet up GENTLY, once the carpet and felt is as dry as you can get it put it all back together and ideally put a de-humidifier in the car for as long as possible.

As you can tell it's not a quick 5 min job, the bad news is if the doors are not sealed then you will have to do it again.

(The sensible solution would be to run a hosepipe round the door BEFORE you start drying the carpet out to make sure no more water is coming in).

Know anybody with an enclosed garage? Put it in there for the day with the doors open and a fan heater in the back?

Also run the a/c whenever you are in the car as this dehumidifies the air coming into the car, regardless of whether it is cooling the air

Best trick I've found is newspaper under the mats, replaced as often as necessary. The carpet and felt wicks moisture into the paper quite well, being artifical fibre. Plus, it's considerably more secure than leaving the doors open, and you can still use the car while the paper's down. :)

Once upon a time i had my old Lupo valeted inside and out.

The guy had steam cleaned all the seats and they were damp, so he suggested putting a seat cover on it untill i got home and perhaps putting the heaters on etc.

I got home, thought, i know, i'll leave it running for a bit with the heaters on to help things dry out.

Skip 14 hours later, after some dinner and a good sleep, i get up in the morning, get ready for work, look for car keys and realize i'd left it running overnight, unlocked, keys in ignition.

It was like a sauna inside, im surprised everything hadn't melted :) lol

Dont try this at home :D

This was going to be my next attempt tomorrow. Glad someone else thinks it's a reasonable idea.

I've been doing this, but I think there's just too much moisture to shift.

The answer is....

They haven't sealed the doors properly. Both of them are still leaking like sieves. Back in tomorrow for another attempt!

Which dealer?

Which dealer?

MSB Skoda in Darlington

Mine are leaking atm. Until i can use a friends garage to fix them, Im putting a small hand towel where the door shuts and slamming it closed. Keeping the inside 100%
