Windscreen wiper mechanism has been squeaking for a while, but recently the problem has moved to the next stage.

If i select the windscreen wipers in either single, intermittent or slow they probably won't work first time. If i select the fast setting it will work, and then if i select the slower settings it will usually be ok for a while.

My guess is the spindles are seizing?

I have tried to get the wipers to come off but they don't seem to want to budge, so first question is where to get a puller, does it matter what type?

next does anyone know if there is a photo guide of how it disassembles and reassembles?

Worst case, how much does a new mechanism cost?

And finally does the mechanism have to be for a Mk 1 Octy or is the mechanism from A3, Golf IV's etc fit?

I've just done mine.

For getting the arms off, mine were very stiff to get off but eventually repeated up/down & side-to-side movement released them - I just kept at it. A puller would help though.

As for the disassembling, it was rather straight forward. Once the arms are off, take off the driver's side windscreen cover (warm up beforehand if you can, start from center of windscreen; I took the other off too, but I could have done things with it on), undo the 3 bolts and weedle the mechanism out using ignition on/off to freeze the mechanism in a convenient pose. Then either prise the arms off the motor arm or take off the motor arm bolt and mark the orientation of the arm on the motor spindle (top tip, don't skip the marking properly).

Each spindle is the same: take off the cover, take off the circlip, slide the arm out making sure that you don't lose the 2 o rings & 2 washers on each spindle. Putting back together is the reverse, but remember to a. fit both o rings & washers b. fit the cover on each spindle. c. fit the spindle shafts into the correct housings - the cranks are slightly different lengths & if you get them wrong the driver's side wiper will over-run the edge of the windscreen.

I suggest that if you have a camera, take photos of the mechanism as/before you take it apart.

You can get mechanisms of eBay. Loads of Golf ones on there and they do look similar, but there could well be differences, so I'd advise check the numbers.
