Another Leak Dont Know Where Its Coming In

Featured Replies

Went to the car today to find that the back passenger side foot well was soaked with water, I have pressure hosed the bottom of the door with someone watching from inside but no water is coming in, the seals are doing their job but cant seem to find where this would be coming into the car. All other parts of the car are dry (divers, front passenger and rear drivers side passenger footwells) are fine.

Any pointers by looking at the picture would be great, thanks.

I the sides of the carpet are dry aswell as i thought it may be running down the sides just under the door but its dry, I have checked the boot and this is dry with no sign of water.

Thanks again guys.

Does the water smell like screenwash?

If so, one of the joints in the pipe to the rear washer has probably popped off. I know that there is one somewhere around the passenger C pillar, but there may be one further forward too.

It could be coming in from lots of places unfortunately.

Do you park nose down on a slope? If so it could be coming in through the boot hinges at the top of the roof.

Also it could be coming in from the front. Where the water is sitting is the lowest point of the floor & the water can run under the carpet & pool there. Do a search for leaks on this forum & start working through them.

Good luck!

It was raining most of the night and this morning it was bad, the water doesnt smell like screenwash and the car doesnt have a rear wash wiper. The car is parked on level ground well when i say that on the road so their is a slight camber.

I think I am going to need some luck with this...its like the water is comming up into the car and this morning there was 2 circular pools of water, door seals were ok. will check the boot hinges though.

If its the boot hinges where the water coming into the car, how would i get round this, thanks again everyone.

Does the car have a sunroof? If so, could a rear drain pipe have come adrift?

The car does have a sunroof but if a drain pipe had come off would i see water on the roof lining of the car as this is dry with no water marks, I have looked at the boot hinges and they seem fine am going to pour some water on the sunroof and see what happens, Cheers.

I think its the door membrain cant do anything until it stops raining, its coming in when i tip water on the rear window...how much are these membranes and are they easy to fit yourself.

I once had a strange leak, the passenger seat on my octi vrs would get wet if it rained for a long time. I was parked on a very slight slope with the front pointing down to the left (seat didn't get wet if I parked the other way round). There was no sunroof and it wasn't screen wash.

Turned out that the windscreen had been replaced and not sealed properly at the top, the water was coming onto the roof lining and through the interior light and dripping onto the seat. I had no idea the windscreen replaced as it must have been done by the previous owner.

Could be worth finding out, could the water be coming in through the roof gutters and through where your rear grab handles are in the roof lining?

Justin, it would depend on where the drain pipe had come loose. There was a diagram once, but I printed a copy which is now at home in my Haynes.

If you suspect the door membraines, check the door base drain holes are clean first, because it would take a lot of water to overtop a door frame.

This sounds very similar to the long-running problem I had with my 1998 Octavia, now solved thanks to this forum. It was caused by a combination of a blocked front LH sunroof drain (black plastic outlet on the front LH door pillar between the upper and lower hinges) and a build-up of silt behind the front LH wing liner allowing rainwater to find its way into the car instead of on to the road. The water tended to collect in the rear LH footwell, sometimes producing a spectacular swimming pool effect.

Check that the sunroof drains work by opening the roof and (carefully) pouring water into the corners of the surround. It should come out via the nozzles on the door pillars. If it doesn't the nozzle is blocked and should be cleared with a suitable object (I used a small piece of aquarium hose). Now pour some water on to the lower LH corner of the windscreen. It should drain out behind the trailing edge of the wing liner but if it doesn't you need to loosen the rear part of the liner (three Torx-headed screws) and dig out the build-up of silt, leaves etc which is probably lurking in there. If the LH side is bad the driver's side will probably not be much better and should be done too (I'm assuming RHD).

The only problem I've got now is that the underlay is taking weeks to dry, even with the carpet lifted.
