Oily Boost Pipe?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have had a little search and found some useful information regarding my problem but Im still unsure!

Can anyone help me out, my boost pipe out the intercooler (FR wheel arch) has a layer of oil covering it, i followed the pipe up and disconnected it further up the system and found:

Appologies for the poor quality.

I am very concerned at the level of oil in the pipe work, is this excessive?

It may be worth a mention but my MPG has dropped by 15mpg over the past 2months - 4000miles. I drive 75% motorway 25% A/B roads. The engine is consuming oil at the normal rate.

Thanks

Mat

Normal due to the way the PCV system works. Crankcase gases and oil vapour get fed into the air intake. PCV elephant hose mod stops it, but you need to clean out the old mess for best results. Worse still, the exhaust soot from the EGR mixes with the oil, and clogs up the EGR and inlet manifold, with a thick sludge.

So a good clean and a 'PCV elephant hose mod' will sort it out?

More or less. The SMIC would need emptied of oil as well, and the nasty pipe clips and lugs don't like being disturbed, and have a tendency to pop off once messed with.

If it's running ok, doing the PCV mod will prevent more oil buildup, so you would only be left with what you have already.

Mine never looked that bad.

I now have the EGR turned down via VAG COM and a rubber hose running down to the drip tray from the PCV.

All I get is a very thin film of oil inside, none of that gunk build up. Eugh.
