Adaptive Cruise Conrol...?

Featured Replies

Has anyone information (or even a rumor from the local importer or from factory) concerning the possible availability of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) for the Superb in the future?

I'll most likely go for a new VW Passat Variant or for a Superb Combi during the next six months. In my eyes (and test drives) Superb seems to have a clear advantage over Passat - EXCEPT it lacks the ACC which Passat has had for some years already. Having some very pleasant experience with ACC I find it pretty hard to imagine I would any longer go for a car without it.

If I just knew that Superb will get one in 2010 I'd have no difficulties waiting for it - but so far I have been unable to find any clue whatsoever to indicate that Skoda would be introducing it in Superb.

So anyone...?

I too am waiting for Skoda to place adaptive cruise controls into their superb's. It would be such a shame to report to my manager that our business fleets will not be driving Skoda. The hype now we hear from our customers is adaptive this and adaptive that. Automatic this, automatic that to say the least. Especially those from Asia and Germany.

I'm guessing this is a European thing as I don't believe the UK Passat has adaptive cruise control. It has ACC but that refers to Adaptive Chassis Control - electronic suspension setting effectively.

Although the VW website does refer adaptive cruise control, this is sold as Automatic Distance Control and appears only to be available on the high end models eg. Phaeton and Touareg but then minimum of £1500 option.

Jeez: Just re-read the first post, 2009

Holy thread necro Batman!!!

Automatic Distance Control including Front Assist, radar sensor controlled distance monitoring system and City emergency braking system is £675 option on the Passat.

Have not used the VAG version but the Volvo equivalent system can, at times, be remarkably stupid.

This can include banging the brakes full on when you are about to ease up alongside a bus waiting at roundabout traffic lights! Not sure who was more concerned, the occupants with the sharp stop accompanied by all the flashing lights and loud beeping, or the chap behind who also wasn't expecting a full on anchors out stop at that point.

The adaptive cruise control in the Volvo case can also be a bit dumb frankly. Catching up slower moving traffic on the motorway, anyone using normal cc would put it on standby so the speed bled away well before just like one would with a normal throttle and using acceleration sense. The adaptive cc keeps it hard on the gas and then goes, "ooh car in front, brake!"

Same when it's settled in a queue and person in front moves to lane in left or right, system thinks, "wha-hay!" so floors it and then "oooh traffic" and brakes.

The system works best when there are very small speed differentials between your general speed and other traffic, when differentials get anything more than 10mph then it makes things look as if your driving is living up to the interpretation some unfairly give to the TDI badge.

ie Total D**k Inside.

Oh all these adaptive or radar cruise control systems I've used I've only ever found that he Mercedes Distronic Plus System works pretty much flawlessly, I suspect once the VW system gets to a stage like the Mercs it will be rolled out into the Superb, as always with Skoda they won't do something unless they are absolutely sure about it.

Hi,

I have active cruise control (ACC) on my Honda CRV which has the ability to set the distance from the car in front before it activates (one, two or three car lengths).

Personally I don't like it as it seems to be forever breaking when I wouldn't normally do so and in order to keep to the speed set the gears change down on a too regular basis so the engine revs very high. Don't think that I am a tailgater as I am not but I do like to be in control of the car at all times.

Hope this viewpoint is helpful.

I don't get it...I don't think I'd ever want adaptive cruise control. Don't get me wrong, I love ordinary cruise control. I've had it now for the last 5 years and I'm convinced it's about the best thing ever invented for motoring. I use it every day and I'm sure it's saved me a speeding ticket or two as well. It just makes driving much more relaxing and therefore safer.

However, I would not want a system that changes my speed without my input. If I'm on a multi lane road and the car in front slows then I'll pull out and overtake if possible. I certainly would not want my speed to be dictated by the behaviour of other drivers. There's far too many idiots on the roads for that!

As with all new car inventions, it's not the technical implementation that is the problem. It's overcoming the (natural) human need for control that is the challenge.

Today with modern cars it's an illusion that we are in full control. ESP is saving us in the corners and on ice, and variable electrical servosteering is giving us a sense of lightness in the steering and i could go on. We drive by wire today at the mercy of the computers.

Adaptive Cruise Control will just be another standard feature that we will all use in 5 years from now. Just wait and see...

I don't mind the computerised systems....It's Richard Cranium in the car in front that concerns me!
