Networking Help

Featured Replies

I'm currently running a very basic home network and I'm having some problems. The phone line is connected to my Netgear DG834N router in my lounge and then a ethernet cable runs upto my study. This cable used to go straight into my pc and I never had a problem. Recently I decided to add a laptop in my study for the wife and I have added a ethernet switch to the cable from downstairs. From this switch, I run the pc and laptop. All was ok for a while but after a few hours, the network fails. I can only get it back running by switching the router off and then on again. I also have to unplug the ethernet cables from the switch and put them back in. What am I doing wrong that is causing this issue? Below is a rough plan of my network and I'm assuming there is configuration issue in my router which is causing the issue??

That should work just fine - you've got it connected correctly.

Can you ping the router and log into the control panel ok when you get issues , or is it just the internet you lose?

I loose the internet and the link between pc and laptop. I cant connect to the router login page either and thats what made me think I might need to configure the router differently

Sounds like your router is locking up, seems a common issue with the dg834Ns - check to make sure you have the latest firmware for it.

Are you able to test it with a fresh piece of CAT5 between the router and the switch? How long is the run?

Firmware has ben updated and the internet has been stable for 24hrs. Hopefully this has resolved the issue

Good stuff. Fingers crossed
