Fabia power steering sensor and pump fault

Featured Replies

Hi all

Wonder if anyone could help. Bought a fabia few days with power steering totaly dead. Turned out it has been flooded and power steering sensor and pump have been fried KFC style. I changed them both and read healthy 14.5V on the main supply wire feeding the ps motor but, power steering is still dead. The warning light remains on and I 'v been told that I must reset the alarm codes in order to restore the power steering operation. Is this correct and can a simple fault code reader like this one do it? See this link : http://www.gendan.co...duct_GDVAG.html

Your help would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Link to Gendan item not working for me, but if it's the blue FCR that costs about £39 then no, it won't do PAS faults. It covers engine, Auto trans, Airbags and ABS only.

Never heard of PAS codes causing no operation of PAS. If the car was flooded, there is a good chance the PAS control module under the PAS pump is fried. Only fix for that is a new PAS pump. Not cheap.

Pump could be got for ~£150 from a scrapper I think, so not too bad!

If you need a new steering rack at any point, you'll be needed more than 500 of those Great British pounds for a Skoda offical parrt.:o:thumbdown::thumbdown:

Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes, it is the blue code reader that cost £39. http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_GDVAG.html I susspected that it's no good for PAS faults reset.

I bought a second hand PAS pump (£140) and steering sensor (£30) from a 2005 Polo I was told. I'v changed them both over the weekend. I could not resist and striped the old pump down. You are correct, the control module on the old pump is fried.

Checked the fuse and it's ok. The interesting thing is when I was checking the supply voltage to the pump with conector on the left side out (data lead - guess coming from the ECU!?) there was no reading but, when I pluged that conector back in it s socket on the pump I got steady 14.5V. What is preventing that voltage to reach and power the motor is I'm guesing the control module or the ECU!? It would be interesting to know what fault codes are!? The instrument panel displays no other faults except for PAS. I'v tried to touch and feel the PAS motor while engine was runing and while my brother was turning the steering wheel left lock to right lock and could not feel it runing, vibrating or anything. When we repeated the same test on his Fabia Sdi I could hear the change in the engine tone as it was being loaded by the demand for power from the PAS. I guess untill I clear the fault codes I will not know for sure!?

Are the only way to reset the faults full VAG-COM software with the USB or a visit to the local dealer? Where do the wires on the left side of the PAS pump come from,ECU? What do they do? I think they signal to control module to supply the power to the motor and untill I clear the fault this will not work!? Perhaps I'm all wrong but, no other idea the moment. By the way Fabia in question is a 2001 TDI Estate Elegance (100bhp). Without PAS feels like I'm driving a Russian T34 WW II tank.

Cheers

Details below are from Skoda Workshop Manual.

Checking the data BUS drive

To check the data BUS drive, first disconnect the connectors

from all the control units (engine control unit -J220-,

automatic gearbox control unit -J217-, ABS control unit -

J104-, power steering control unit -J500-, control unit with

display in dash panel insert -J218-, airbag control unit -

J234- and vehicle voltage control unit -J519-). Only then

is it possible to check the data BUS wiring for short circuits

and for short circuits to earth and positive terminal.

So you are looking for control unit J500

I think a trip to a dealer or VAG independent might be in order. Have codes cleared are go from there.

Good luck,

Edit: Just a thought, have you checked the large link fuses on the top of the battery. They don't need to be blown, as corrosion can cause problems.

Thanks for your reply. I'v checked the fuses on the battery and all are fine. Out of interest where did you get the workshop manual from? Haynes manual does not have anything with regards to PAS wireing and it's really not helping me much. Looks like I am heading to the dealer for fault codes resets. If the want more then say £90 I'm gona get the VAG COM.

You dont need to go to a dealer for fault reading etc, one of us specialists in the traders section should be able to help you : )

Skoda manuals should be available for download from Mediafire website. Be advised though, they are huge PDF files (Usually 50Mb+), and not that easy to follow, as most references are for using Skoda test equipment. File names are also in some foreign language so it's pot luck as to what you are downloading :'( Actual content is in English though.
