MX5 not so good in snow....

Featured Replies

i just couldn't get confident with them in the damp, tho temp seems to play a big part in the performance of them too, they are awesome in the dry tho

II know what you mean. The stiff sidewalls make it hard to judge how hard you are pushing, but they are not too snappy when they let go, and super accurate when recovering, so not too scary.

it amazes me how useless summer compounds are with low temps

Some are better than others really. The R888 are at least as good as most performance road tyres in the cold when it is dry, still good in the wet. Only when standing water is in the equation are they poor, but that is down to void area (or lack thereof). The Falken ZE912 I have been running on the Mini of late have been really good too. Been able to handle hills and situations that would have been a nono on the T1R or Goodyear Excellence.

Nothing beats a dedicated winter tyre though. Snow tyres or even studded tyres work so much better than summer tyres.
