Need Urgent Help

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Car is making this strange noise when i turn the ignition on and 20 seconds after i turm it off, I live in an isolated area with 2 year old and have to go to the airport on christmas day andpick up mother in law. Any help from mechanics would be very gratefully appreciated and I would happily send a bottle of single malt to the correct christmas diagnosis.

Thanks.

cant get the link to work, but if i was you(and you have breakdown) id get the car down the road and phone break down saying theres something up with the car. see what he has to say.

link doesnt work for me though

Link worked for me, but I'm afraid I can't help!

Open the bonnet and check if the fans are spinning as it sounds like something is stuck or catching them.Maybe even a bearing on the fans if they have one.

It took a while for the link to come on line, it is OK now, Thanks for the help, may do the breakdown thing tommorrow but it seems to drive OK, only started after I had a couple of new tyres fitted on the front. I want to wish everyone a happy christmas. Where is Lummox?

I had a look under the bonnet and fans and belts seem to be ok. When fans stopped noise continued, thing is that it happens when neither the fan or belts are moving. curiouser and curiouser.

Can you pin point where the noise is coming from?

Right behind the grill at the front.

Im presuming you've a 1.9TDI or 2.0TDI?

If so open the bonnet and look on the rear of the bulk head, theres a valve block with around 5 vacuum lines attatched to it on the right hand side. Mines started to make a noise like this since its been cold. Although it sounded a little more rattly on mine, it seems to run on after the ignition has been turned off.

I gave it a thump the other day and the noise gave over, and its not done it since.

HTH.

Thanks a lot Browny, its a 2.0 tdi. I am a mechanical idiot and therfore going to look in the morning for anything that has 5 pipes going into it and smack it, I am not going to pretend i know what a bulk head or vacuum hose looks like  It has been damn cold and wet here in Madrid.

Edited by gilesk

The bulk head is the piece of metal behind the engine seperating the engine bay from the cabin.

The vacuum hoses are small pipes around 6mm in diameter at a guess

Just a quick picture on the 1.9TDI.

Browny you are a star, will have a go tomorrow when it is light, my wife thought I was a sad ass hanging out on a skoda site, now she thinks you are great!

Good night all and THANKS!

There not a cheap part to replace, but i certainly would suggest looking at that part and listening for any noise.

Morning all, took it to the village mechanic and it is the EGR valve, luckily jammed shut and not open, part on order and fitting on Tuesday, he disconnected it so i have an engine management light but he said it was fine to drive. Thanks for your help and I hope this can help anyone else in the same boat. Feliz Navidad.

Im glad you found the cause :)

Im glad you found the cause :)

I was too until I picked it up and the bill was 680 Euro 310 for the valve, 100 for the resetting ICU and diagnostics and 270 on

labour, perfect at christamas time, does this seem right?

Bump , can anyone tell me if this price sounds OK or should I be going back and using the jack for the first time on the mechanic?
