question for all you MDI owners

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have the MDI module installed in my new Octavia Elegance and I've connected a 80Gb Hdd (and also sometimes a 16Gb USB stick) via the proper MDI USB cable.

Now everything seems to work fine but I noticed one strange thing which happened on both the HDD and the USB stick, while using the MIX function and I'm am wondering if some of you experience the same issue.

The problem is this:

I have somewhere around 40Gb music content on my HDD and the maximum of 16Gb of music conent on the USB stick. Everything plays fine, but when i use the MIX option (I want to use the HDD as a random Jukebox) I notice the randomness limits itself to only a part of hte HDD or Usbstick. 99% of the time it picks a song from an artist/band starting with an A, B, C,D, E or F. Occasionally (1 in 20 songs or so) it picks an artist beyond F. So it seems the MIX function doesn't really do random selection. Do any of you experience the same problem?

By the way, If you want to use the MIX function over your entire hdd, make sure to put a single song in the root of the disc.

thanks,

Andrik

Hi Andrik & welcome to Briskoda.

I can only comment on the Bolero but presume that the MDI part will be similar in that the mix function doesn't work in the same way as an ipod for instance.

It will play the songs in each folder in a random order before moving on to another folder where it will do the same there. It won't move between folders before finishing playing all the tracks in each folder though.

Also, ensure the sub directory option is ticked in the setup or you might not even get this far!

Hi,

and thanks!

I know how the MIX function works, I had to find out myself. As I mentioned in my first post, if you want to use the MIX option over all songs in all folders, you have to put one single song in the root of the HDD, then and after setting the sub directory option, it will select random songs OVER the folders and not IN a folder (as long as the MDI starts playing the song in the root of the HDD).

so my HDD looks like this:

<root>

song.mp3 (has to be there in order to use MIX over the entire disk)

<artist 1 folder>

<album 1 folder>

song.mp3

song2.mp3

etc.....

<album 2 folder>

<artist 2 folder>

<album 1 folder>

etc...

So the MIX function works as far as selecting different artists and different songs, its just that it only selects songs from a range of artists, in my case artists starting with the letter A through F, so, as the disk is organised in artist folders and then album folders, it seems the mix functions only MIXES over a small portion of the HDD. To make it more confusing, occasionally, once in 20-30 songs, it will choose a song outside the A through F range, say a song from an artist name starting with N.

I hope I made myself clear... I know how the random function should work, it just doesn't seem to work fully

Andrik

Where's IJ when you need him? He's an expert on the MIX function! :D

Simbo - Have you heard that saying about bulls and rags coloured red? :giggle:

Be prepared for the IJ onslaught......

MIX? MIX? ARRRGGH!

I've got one folder with 2559 tracks in it, no artists folders, just tracks & it still won't mix...

BAH HUMBUG!

Mine did exactly the same with the iPod, the same songs kept re-appearing not long after you'd been through them

I think you're probably running into a table limit. The radio will have a limited amount of memory and it will need to read the tracks in so it can shuffle them. Once it fills its memory table up, it won't be able to shuffle anything more than that.

You can generally get a good idea if this is the case by counting the tracks in the directories that are played. You may find it will be something like 1000 or 500, 250 or some power of 2.

It should be possible to get a firmware update for stuff like this but the radio manufacturers would rather sell you a new radio.

I'm pretty sure the only difference between an MP3 enabled radio and a Non-mp3 identical model will be software not hardware and I'd like to try upgrading my Stream with Stream MP3 software to try it out. I'm certain that with a software upgrade, the Stream could be made into a much better radio.

If anybody has a burnt out Stream and Stream MP3 I'd like to have a look at them B)

thats sounds very likely, shame though as it seems to be limited to about 100 tracks which isnt much variation in a 40gb music collection, still wish I could still have MDI with the Audi, one thing I really miss from the Passat
