Unusual courtesy light problem

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have an unusual problem with the interior courtesy light on my W-reg Fabia 1.4 MPi.

There are of course three positions the interior light can be in: off, on, or set to come on when a door is opened.

But on mine the light stays on even when set for the last of those settings and all doors are closed. I.e. when I the light should go off upon closing a door, it doesn't. It just stays on. So in effect I have one position that works for permanently 'off' and the other two settings are permanently 'on'.

I have searched other posts about courtesy light problems. But there the problem seems to be about the light not coming on at all. In those cases the issue seems to be about the switch in the door. I have tried spraying WD40 in the lock mechanism anyway, but it makes no difference. And besides, the lights does work - it just won't switch off when all the doors are shut. The only way to turn it off is to turn the mechanism to 'off'.

Perhaps in connection with this the 'lights on' buzzer doesn't work. Other people seem to have problems with both together. However, the interior light problem started at east six months before the warning buzzer problem.

Any insight would be really helpful!

Thanks

Ian

is it on perminatly? mine stays on when you shut and lock the door then goes off after 25 secs

Micro switch in drivers door.

Hi and thanks for replying. To answer:

1. Yes, it stays on permanently

2. I've read other posts saying it is the micro switch in the door in situations where the interior light doesn't come on - but mine stays permanently on. Could it still be the micro switch?

Cheers

Oh, and the issue remains regardless of which doors I open and close - the light just stays on!

It only takes one switch in any door to trigger the light. Might be easier to get a scan done to narrow the switch down. Drop the back seats forward and see if the boot light is on with tailgate shut. Could even be tailgate.

Thanks - I'll look into that. So basically you that one f the micro switches has gone in one of the doors?

And doing a computer scan will throw up a fault code?

It might, but you can also monitor all the switches individually with VCDS to see if the car thinks a door is open.

Just realised it's strange you haven't got a door open warning light with engine running. Modern cars eh, complete mystery half the time. VCDS scan should narrow it down though.

Thanks for all the pointers. I'm a novice, so I have some questions!:

1. VCDS - what is that? I have heard of VAG-COM. Presumably VCDS is some other software? And I take it along to an auto-electricians for that?

2. Might it be a problem with the light fitting in the ceiling? I have had it out before and couldn't notice anything obvious.

Cheers again

Vag Com Diagnostic Software? May be wrong :p

Hi guys, My car is the same as the OP. Even the boot light stays off when its open. The lights stays on onless I move the switch to te off posistion.

I've taken part of the interior light unit out to look the switch. I really could do with some sort of diagram to demonstrate how it ought to look!

Should there be a door ajar light on the 2000 Fabia 1.4MPi Classic? It's the bog standard version so perhaps not?

The interior light is still staying on but there is no door ajar light to say one of the mechanisms isn't working right.

Sort of the same issue as OP....

Someone mentioned the interior light going off after 25 seconds of the door closing, but whilst I generally don't have that much patience, it should still go off immediately once the engine is started? right? which of course mine obviously doesn't.

Also:

- My boot light does work, but usually takes its time to realise I've even opened the boot, so I'm getting ready to close it before it lights up.

- The door ajar buzz thing works

One thing for you both to note is, there are no courtesy light switches in the doors to go wrong, the light is controlled by a module (sometimes call "Door Position Module")in the drivers door casing which monitors the position of the door solenoids in conjunction with the central locking module. There are a couple microswitches in the door module that can become dislodged or breaks on the small PCB inside. The same goes for all VAG cars. Not an easy one to solve. I've fixed a SEAT Arosa courtesy light by opening up the module and resoldering cracked terminals but not had the problem with a Fabia yet. I 'm sure a fellow Briskodian knows exactly whre the Door Module is and will enlighten us soon.

Great - thanks for the new leads to follow up. Anyone know where to find the Door Module?

You will have to remove the drivers door card for starters. The module will be a plastic case somewhere near the the interior or exterior door handles, should be easy to spot. as there is not much else in there apart from the window mechanism and wiring.

There will be a rod or two connecting the handles to the module and a wiring loom. It is not a job that is going to take an hour or two, it took me a whole day to fix the Arosa module. I would leave it till warmer weather appears unless you have a nice warm garage.

I'm sure this is on the site somewhere and I know you can get the bulbs from superskoda but I don't fancy paying 34.99 euros, does anyone know what type of bulb they are

^ They look like LED ones to me. There are no 'bulbs' as such in them.

Firstly, i had a issue similar,

I took the interior light out, and found where the switch is the spring had come off the runner. Back on it all worked.

seconly, these are fitted into my vrs  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-LED-Error-Free-Footwell-Door-Courtesy-Luggage-Light-Audi-A1-A2-A3-A4-A5-A6-A8-/351314531248?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item51cbfa53b0&clk_rvr_id=814069417303&afsrc=1&rmvSB=true
