Replacement exhaust...questions

Featured Replies

Having racked up almost 50,000 miles now on my 2.0tdi PD, I am wondering if anyone can advise me of the following?

What sort of mileage might I expect to be needing to replace the exhaust system at? I am planning to drive with my family all around Scandinavia in July, so by then I'd imagine the mileage will be in the region of 58- 59,000 miles.

Has anyone replaced their exhausts on this model recently? What sort of cost is involved? Will it need a whole system, or what? And finally, has anyone any advice on where to get the work done cheapest, when it needs done?

I do around 18k miles annually, a mixture of short journeys and quite a few longer ones thrown in too.

Many thanks in advance,

M

Difficult to say... but I would have thought that you'd be ok

My current Saab is on 61K on the original exhaust, the one it replaced had done 78K when it went back to the lease company... In fact, I can't think of any car I've owned/driven in the last 10 years that needed a replacement exhaust and since 2002 I've only ever driven diesels (Seat Toledo, Peugeot 406, Jaguar X-Type and 2 Saab 9-3s). All left me with original exhausts still on them (seat @36K, Pug @82K, Jag @19K and Saabs as above) so I would have thought you'd be ok...

Steve (waiting very very impatiently for his Octy CR VRS to be delivered...)

My Passat diesel had 140k miles on the clock when I traded it in. No serious rust on the aluminized exhaust. Assuming the Octavia has a similar specification, a long time yet before any replacement is needed.

My Hyundai Coupe had a silver painted system which rotted very fast and was replaced under warranty, after dropping off at 1 year. SWMBO Hyundai Getz exhaust looks in much better shape after 2 1/2 years.

I have a PD140 DSG and still have the original exhaust on the car. ( 285,000kms )

Thanks for the replies. It would appear I have nothing to worry about for a while yet!

2001 Octavia Combi 4*4 with 148k miles - still on the original exhaust - the car has been in Germany for 2 years surviving their winters .
