Insurance time again - Can't get those "great" prices

Featured Replies

OK so it's insurance time again.

I've just had my renewal through from More Than and immediately thought "No way I'm paying that".

So I've been online for some more quotes - I've spent a good couple of hours and I just cannot get a better price.

So this is insurance for my January 2007 Octy vRS.

Approx. 15,000 miles a year

Looking for total excess around £100

So me.

I'm 34, have held a full license since I was 17.

I've got 16yrs NCB - No accidents, fixed penalties etc

I'm in a low risk PE16 postcode.

Need car in case of accident

Legal cover etc

My renewal is £444

I've had a couple cheaper, but by the time I bring the excess down etc it's just as expensive.

So, where the hell do I get these great premiums everyone posts on these forums?

I would have thought I'd reached the "perfect" age and conditions for insurance now - quotes seem to say otherwise.

its all a big con-my brother in law has many yrs ncb like you-his quotes have gone up with several companies!!!!!!

my experience this year (renewed in December) is that prices have increased :(

Have you tried directline?

It is well worth trying my company on 02083645500, we offer a discount to Briskoda members so please mention the club when you call us.

Alternatively you are welcome to PM us with your contact details and we can arrange a call back, or email [email protected] for a call back.

Thanks

Have you tried upping the excess? I only insure what I would feel truly uncomfortable in paying myself - my thoughts are that the insurance companies make a large profit on top of the average cost of repair so unless its truly unsavoury then I am better off that way. Having said with a £500 excess that my quote was only £370 but then I only have 3 yrs no claims.

I'm just over 40, use the vRS for business use and SDP, do about 15k a year and am paying £500 with Hastings. The dog came in at exactly the same. Poor postcode area too. I don't rate these comparison websites - I got a quote and went direct to the cheapest quote and got it cheaper. Adrian Flux was competitive too.

Well I've just managed to reduce my quote.

I've changed from £100 total excess to £200 (£100 comp. £100 Extra).

And then the biggest thing - I've added my wife.

Now she's on a PROVISIONAL license.

However my quote is now:

£355 from Admiral.

If I stick to £100 excess it was nearer £400.

More Than was my best up until now (and before I added the wife) at a renewal of £444 from last year.

Yup, usually women lower the policy. Just check what it is with a full licence as some insurers will hike the rates up when she's passed.

insurance is a bit strange to me,

i'm 21, 2years ncb, 4 years licence never made a claim, but i never had own car until 2 years afer passed my test just used dads car as and when i needed it.

my felicia is insured with CIS, and i am paying £312 fully comp, due to the value of my car i enquired about 3rd party cos i believed it would go cheaper, but no 3rd party came out at £720 with the same company, price comparisom cant find me anything below £500, i dont understand how they worked out my price, its got legal cover, enhanced courtesy car whatever that is, 60days european cover, £0 excess+ company minimum of £250 for being under 23 or 25 or whatever age restriction it is.

STOOFA!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you & thank you again!!

Me = 40yrs old, 8yrs NCD, protected, £100 excess, BD2 postcode, S,D,P&C+Business.

My insurance renewal quote came through at £459 (based on 10k miles) :( Rang them for a revised quote with my mileage at 12k - new quote: £505. Ouch!!!

Tried all the comparison sites (earned a cuppla quid through Quidco in the process) & got loadsa quotes from insurance companies directly incl Brisky partners, Adrian Flux & Sky, Chris Knott never bothered phoning back!!!! - couldn't get anything even close to my renewal, let alone cheaper.

Even tried your advice re adding SWMBO (who has a provisional) & all that did was bump up the premium again, proving my scepticism from when I read this earlier in the week!

Soooo, rang my existing insurers to renew, ready to hand over £505 of my hard earned... but just for a laugh I asked how much it would be adding SWMBO (provisional since 1997 & never had a lesson in her life) - well, bugger me - it's only lowered it to £418 ...the lady I was speaking to wasn't surprised in the least - I was absolutely gobsmacked!!

None of the comparison sites gave anything lower by adding my better half... some increased it by hundreds in fact!!!!

So Stoofa... you've saved me almost £90 ...I owe you a beer at the very least some time!!!!

Thanks again!!!! :D

I'm pleased it worked out for you too :)

I just can't get my head around it.

To lower my insurance by around £90 by adding a "major risk" (and lets be honest here people, someone on a provisional behind the wheel of the vRS) in the form of my wife just seems crazy.

She hasn't actually decided if she wants to cotinue learning to drive or not - but the policy doesn't say I have to let her drive the car, just she can.

Women are always seen as lower risk. But the provisional bit I dont get. Another Insurance oddity

Also remember provisionals are only valid for 10 years, then need renewing.

Seems as though I'm not the only one that's been shocked by my insurance renewal for 2010. I have been covered by esure for the past couple of years and been happy with their premiums - but this year's is a gobsmacking £497 (for an 06 Superb Elegance 2.5TDi / self 64yr old Local Govt Officer.)

I emailed Sky Insurance as per the reply as above at 14.20, got a phone call at 14.30 for details and got a faxed confirmation of a much more acceptable quote of £386 through at 14.57.

Can't ask for much better than that

A lot of insurance companies are backed by the big banks so trying to claw as much money back as possible following last year's meltdown.

The quote we have from Sheilas Wheels, for a new Octy vRS with 300 excess, many years ncb, 8000 mpa, with SO as the main driver (well it will be her car) , we are both wrinkleys £177-50

OK so it's insurance time again.

This is utter nonsense. But then that's insurance. I'm 28 with a fault claim and conviction for careless driving (or at least was in October at renewal) with 4yrs NCB. I'm fully comp at £500 with protected NCB and a modified policy. And that wasn't the cheapest either, but Brentacre know what they're doing and have always been awesome so I don't mind spending £30 over the cheapest for better service. Sure, I live in Cornwall, but that quote seems ludicrous to me.

I'm pleased it worked out for you too :)

I added my GF to the policy a couple of years back and it reduced it by about £60 , and she didn't actually drive the car once during the year.

What's slightly annoying is that she acquired an SP30 and it then put my insurance up by £40 , though still cheaper than taking her off. Her insurance policy with the same company only went up by a tenner!
