Fitting new Air con compressor - how?

Featured Replies

Apparently the clutch is the guilty party, which looks like a common fault and it isn't repairable / replaceable; it's the whole compressor that needs replacing!

Is there anything actually difficult about this job other than undo old compressor (and all the connecting pipes), put new part on, reconnect pipes. drive to quick fit to get system charged with gas.?

It is a £700 - £800 from the dealers, I think a second hand pump should be about £100 and then a couple of hours to fit? or are there some gotchas?

ta.

Needs to be done by aircon specialist. Old gas has to be collected. If the system is empty fair enough, straight forward spanner stuff, then recharge the system.

pretty certain it is fairly empty at the moment ;)

Can you get to the compressor without removing lots of other stuff?

Under tray, aux drive belt, helps if it's on a 4 poster.

Cheers. I like to make my life difficult so it'll be a couple of axle stands for me!

You can buy new compressors for £425 at VAG parts specialists, fit yourself then go for a recharge although you will probably need a new drier as well. As the compressor is at the front of the engine it's quite easy to change.

In fact I'll probably go for a used one, to be honest. I reckon <£100. I'm selling the fabia anyway, just want to be able to do it honestly and get top dollar ;)

Had the pleasure of replacing mine a few months back. I came to the conclusion I wanted a new one then waying up the costs and hasle I decided to pay the extra and get the dealer to sort it.
