Coolant/Thermostat Question

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Maybe someone here will help me with my frustration.

I have a 52plate skoda fabia 1.4mpi, i will describe in detail what the problem is with the coolant/temperature gauge.

When driving around town less than 40 mph it would keep temperature at 90, as soon as i got onto the motorway it would shoot down to zero? Could this be as a result of cold air input into the engine?

Secondly, the temperature sensor failed on me yesterday, the check engine light came on as a result, thats how i knew it possibly went. I went to the skoda dealership bought a new one and and replaced it...The check engine light eventually went off and when idling it was keeping temperature. Now driving at more than 40mph just about an hour ago, the coolant light went on, and the temperature gauge went from 90 to zero?

Could this be the sensor in the excess tank?

HELP?

i replaced the sensor at the dealership and a little coolant came out, but topped back up to max....also the heater inside the car is horrid as a result of the weather?

any feedback would be great!

Adam

sounds like the thermostat is stuck open

thank you, thats what i thought,

is it still ok to drive until i get it replace?

anyone know?

thanky ou

yes its ok to drive, but you will have to put up with being cold at speed

I think it will be ok to drive, but better to get it fixed sooner rather than later..

I once bought a 15year old mk3 Golf that had a broken thermostat. The engine had lots and lots of mayonaised engine oil from the COLD engine. I was led to believe it had been run like that by the previous owner for quite sometime...

anyway I changed the thermostat myself and engine oil+flush, and that car lasted me another good 20,000miles (160,000 in total) before I sold it on.

so from my experience, it should be ok short term...

thank you for the responses,

I am doing the job of fixing the thermostat today...i love how the stealers are really stealers...bought today the thermostat for 30 quid from skoda, last week i bought the temperature sensor for 23 quid...however the thermostat /housing comes with the temperature sensor...bullocks...

Just finished, as suspected the spring in the thermostat was broken all over the place...filled it up with coolant, let it run for 10 minutes, took it out for a stroll, awesome, everything is in its place!

thanks

Unfortunately that is what happens when you mis-diagnose a problem. At least you'll have a spare sensor.
