Dripping Fluid in Engine Compartment - CR vRS

Featured Replies

Was just shovelling the snow from around my vRS and noticed fluid (water? doesn't smell) dripping from the front of the LHS wheel-arch. At first I thought it was just snow melting from Thursday when I last drove it, but then realised that there wasn't any and checked in the engine compartment. It's dripping from behind the LHS headlights, behind what looks like an outlet pipe that comes from or from under the turbo. Dripping a couple of drops every 2-3 seconds so worried if it's been like this since thursday (or birth!) that something'll be running low

Here's a photo (taken by holding my phone into the compartment, so apologies for the quality!) taken when the engine was running, doesn't seem to make a difference whether it was running or not.

Is this possibly just ice/snow melting under the windscreen then dripping down into the compartment, or is there some kind of fluid line running past this area that I should have checked out?

Many thanks in advance!

It isn't just fluid from the air conditioning is it, that is the water removed from the air by the climate control? I don't know where the vent on the vRS is. The manual mentions this (page111 for the FL), but is doesn't say where under the car you will see it.

I guess a question is have you had the air con running?

Otherwise ???

I did have the aircon running on thursday the last time i ran the car, it is possible that the aircon water froze and is now defrosting, however i would have thought that it would be better positioned than dripping onto a plastic tray and then leaking through the seal to get to the outside...having said that... :S

Won't be the aircon as that won't run below 4 degrees to prevent frosting up.

I'm trying to work out where the pipe is.

If the you trace both ends of the pipe where do they go?

I couldn't get my hands far enough it to trace it - i could feel the drip on my fingertips, just behind that black pipe in the centre of the photo (as far as I could tell it wasn't this that was leaking, the drip was behind it). Sorry, not much to go on!

Just had a look at the pic but can't really make out what the problem might be, might be worth taking the headlight unit out which might make the pipe inspection easier. From what I can see In the photo this might be a drain pipe...Maybe....

If its dripping every 2-3 seconds you should be able to collect a reasonable amount in a container and get a better idea what the fluid is. Also, you could trace the pipe back and put a rag around it to try and trace the source of the leak e.g. if the drips stops the source is further back to the rag and vice versa.

Thanks for the replies! Just went out to look at it again - if anything it's dripping even faster now.

I'm beginning to suspect that it is just melted snow that's tricked its way down intothe compartment from the wiper area, that would explain why it's faster now (big thaw happening) and also why I'm struggling to find the pipe that it's coming from. Behind theoutlet in the picture is a fklat surface and I can see water that's collected there. I'nm guessing it's dripped under the fuse box and collected there, where it's now dripping down and out of harm's way. If it continues after tomorrow (I've cleared all the snow) then will take it to the dealer for a quick check!

PS Sorry for the numerous typos in this message, my laptop has decided to not display any text on the screen!
