a problem with the VRS

Featured Replies

i set of from the post office after work and the car was on choke again after a 30 minutes drive home . i got home on my drive let her tick over for a few seconds and turned her of and back on again and went straight up to 2000rpm and stayed there until i taped the throttle pedal and maked a noise and went down to choke again .

in the mornings she seems like shes kicking alot of exhaust steam out too , but ive still got the power .

could it be a split pipe ?

This could be a split hose or possibly a temp sensor issue. Look up these on the search thread and you will find this common problem.

The VRS will kick out lots of steam in this cold weather.

Mine does this...why is it exactly??? Do they just run a bit rich, leading to lots of water vapour or something?

Mine doesn't go through any oil or coolant so aside from something like a MAF issue, O2 sensor prob or water collecting in the exhaust when I'm sitting in traffic (happens lots) I can't see anything else that would cause it.

Not so much runing rich, but as the weather is cold, the top of the engine and exhaust will have condensation in it, and as the car warms up, this condensation is converted to water vapour. The VRS and other turbo car's warm up very quickly so you tend to get this water vapour in a rapid state more so than in none turbo cars.

Also as the standard VRS exhaust back box is a great source for collecting water as that warms up, the same thing, lots of water vapour.

Ahh that makes sense emoticon-0100-smile.gif So it's nowt to worry about, which is good, cheers.

Yep all standard stuff on these cars

hi , thanks for the reply . just an update .

everytime i turn the engine of and back on its reving at 1200rpm which is choke and goes back down . it reved up to 2000rpm then second time i turned her off and back on .

got my dad to pick me a theromsat and cooling temperature sensor ( i think he said ) from his work place . going to fit them tonight . let you know either tonight or tomorrow what happens . i think it mite work as the temp gauge stays just under or over the quater mark !

looking throught the haynes manual and theres a test you can do on the theromsat which i do tonight .

Temp sensor common problem to go and easy to change, manual is good for that one, takes a few minutes that's all. Seem more than 3 threads on that today, must be the cold weather.

Thermostat is a bugger to get to and you need to either try and save your coolant or flush it whilst thermostat out and replace with new coolant if you don't know how old it is.

Mark.

Sounds very much like a knackered thermostat

Quoted from a post by me on a similar thread t'other week:

Almost certain that this will be a sticky thermostat. I replaced mine a few weeks ago because it took an eternity to warm up and it wouldn't get above 80deg unless caning it. Fuel consumption was poor-ish too. After replacing the stat and o-ring seal it now hits 90deg much quicker than before and stays there regardless of the type of driving I'm doing.

A how-to guide can be found HERE

I didn't bother removing the dipstick cover, it didn't get in the way at all. However I did remove the connections to the alternator and cable-tie them out of the way. If you're half decent with tools and take your time, you should be fine. Mine needed about 250ml of G12 coolant afterwards to top up.

If you get the job done at a main dealer I believe it's quite expensive because they remove the aux belt, alternator and possibly drain all the coolant too.

ive replaced the cooling temp sensor and got it read on the VAG com by my dads mates garge which he deas in VAG cars and is **** hot with them too . anyway it came up with two faults , one was when the battery died and was replaced at christmas and the other was cooling temp sensor . this could be when i un-pluged it and replaced it with the OME one .

now the temp gauge sits just under 90 and each time the engine is turned off and on it doesnt go on choke no-more and doesnt rev up to 2000rpm .

thanks for the help !

Whilst we're on dodgy temp sensors, my gauge died over Xmas and traced it down to the plastic casing round the wiring chafing on the earth for the sensor. Sealed the cable back up with instant gasket and it's been fine since. Worth while checking this if anyone has problems with the temp sensor. The design makes it very easy for the cables to chafe on the plastic.
