Should I put bleach into my oil...not sure on this

Featured Replies

Just want to run this by you guys, some of you may know i have been getting very poor miles per gallon (11 mpg around town) But 2 of my mates said to put half a litre of bleach into the oil via the filler cap and said that the cholorine in the bleach opens up all the injectors and valves and that the car wil be much better for it.

I havent done this as personally i have never heard of this but just wondered if I should give this a go, but want to run it by you guys first.

Has anyone else done this to solve poor fuel consumption as the red ex stuff only comes in small bottles, Thanks

They are NOT your mates!!!!

This will destroy your engine very quickly

Adding bleach to the oil of a car can destroy the engine.

confirmed

The engine started but it soon started smoking, and very quickly overheated. The engine was so hot, that the undercarriage started burning and Adam fried an egg on the tailpipe. The engine was ultimately ruined.

I was told that red ex has bleaching agents in it and that by using half a litre of bleach to 4 litres of oil will be better than messing about with 250 ml of red ex. I have tried looking on the net but cant find anything.

google is your best friend, not these 2 u refered to.

They said that bleach is a cleaning agent like carb cleaner, I only want to get better fuel ecconomy. Why would my mates say this when I have known them for a while.

red ex goes into your fuel, not your oil

If you want to try to clean your injectors, buy some injector cleaner.

I'd suspect you have something more fundamental wrong though.

bleach

such as used in toilets etc. harmfull to skin / burns/erodes.

bleach used in hair. left too long is bad but thats it.

redex bleach agents- designed for car engines.

another analogy.

fuel

derv and UL, ok both fuel but damage can result if misuesd.

If this is a serious question , just pour a cupful of oil into a can and splash a drop of bleach in and see what happens, the structure of the oil will break down totally .

This will help your fueleconomy no end as your car will seize , thus negating the need for fuel

Take a plug out and look at the electrode , this will give you an idea of how your cars running , or better yet , take it to a competant mechanic for assessment.

What car do you have with what engine ?

PMSL.

And how do yo improve MPG, redbull in the washer fluid?

Its a MK1 Octavia 1.6 petrol aeh engine, and it is a serious question as no bugger can sort it and my nearest dealler is 40 miles away, I am just fed up with getting 11 or at best 16 mpg round town thats all.

The plugs seem fine but they were only replaced 2 months back

I will give this a miss but cant understand why so called freinds would suggest such a thing, I knew bleach was for cleaning so thought Id run it here first before i went ahead.

Your friends may have honestly believed this as ive heard it a few times before. Just as well you had the sense to check rather than going ahead and doing it.

Do not use bleach or you will damage your engine.

If you want to clean your injectors and valves use a product that is intended for this purpose like a Fuel Injector Cleaner

Sounds like a MAF issue.

You dont need a dealer for this mate.

Pull a plug out tommorow and see if its very black and oily , if so the cars running far too rich , too much fuel , if thats the case its probably a maf issue as gadgetman says.

If this isnt the case then your either losing it from a leak or you have brakes binding on , are you discs glowing red at all

hows it going to clean injectors in the oil anyway? surely you'd have to add it to the fuel?

Sounds like a wind-up to me....

Because they're retarded.

surely if your getting poor fuel economy trying to clean the fuel system would be the way to go, i'd bite the bullet and spend a fiver on some redex, what harm can that do?

Adding bleach to the oil is so rediculous I laughed so hard a bit of wee came out.

Please don't do it, engine death will be certain.

The 1.6AEE in your Octy is a very simple engine. It does have a level of diagnostics too, get VCDS/VAGCOM on it for a code scan.

I not going to do it and have bought some fuel injector cleaner and see if this does anything, I have a basic code reader and the only error code that comes up is ABS inplausable signal and thats always been on but the ABS light is going off when i start the car, I thought I would of got some code but then its only a basic code reader.

Thanks for the help

No wind up mate i am only getting about 11MPG sometimes i am lucky and get about 16MPG showing around town its costing a fortune, then the bleach thing got mentioned and I ran it here first, I am not that clued up when it comes to anything like cleaning or flushing stuff out.
