Do you have to get steel wheels?

Featured Replies

Thinking about next winter if I've still got the vrs. Winter tyres is a must for where I live, so these will be ordered in time.

My question is..Why do people go for steel wheels aswell, rather than just swapping their tyres? Is it because with all the salt or grit it can damage your alloys?

Also, roughly how much are you paying to get them (tyres only) swapped over? Does it include balancing aswell?

Thanks :smirk:

It's easier, and you don't have to pay some spotty oik several times to remove and fit the tyres.

You're looking at £5-15 a wheel for fitting and balancing.

I had 4 steelies inclusive of Good tyres for £100 which is cheaper than I could have sourced 2 tyres for.

Bearing in mind you're only gonna use 'em for maybe 3-4 months of the year then I wouldn't wanna be paying out +/- £70 every time I wanted to swap tyres.

Hiya, where could you get 18" steel wheels from to fit a Vrs Ocatvia and how much would they be? Can you even get 18" steel wheels for an Octavia? This is somthing I'm having to lookinto now as living on a non gritted slope has been a big problem now for 2 weeks!!

No, you'd need 16" steel wheels. Higher profile tyres will offer more compliance in this weather also.

You could put the winter tyres on any wheels you like - alloys or steelies. Usual logic is that it doesn't matter if the steels get knocked about a bit or as you say, that the salt and grit won't harm them.

But you could as easily just buy a 2nd set of alloys and fit the winter tyres to them. Doesn't matter. But definitely get another set of wheels to put them on - far easier :)

You might be able to source the steel wheels from dealers. I did once when i had a fabia and the dealer had a pile of steel's left over from alloy wheel upgrades on other cars.

16" steel wheels with the 6J offset are the ones to go for and also the only ones you can fit snow chains to.

That plus winter tyres in 16" size are so much cheaper than you would expect

It worked out about the same for me to get some cheap new 16" wolfrace alloys and avon ice tourings as it would have to get tyres for my 18" 240 40 S-Line wheels
