Build Quality issues

Featured Replies

HI

Iam a new user to this site and thinking of buying a Yeti when I replace my VW Golf shortly.

I am concerned out the articles i have read on here where owners are having build quality issues such as rattles /creaks on there new Yeti,s

I was looking at Skoda because i had heard they were very well bulit .

Is anyone else having problems like this with a Skoda Yeti they have purchased ?

one or two members have reported rattles but it does not seem to put them of their Yeti. One or two have some issues with HID lights as well. I do not think that anything substantial wrong has come up to date. i still plan to buy and non of this has put me off because the problems are not wide spread and will most likely be sorted by the time mine will arrive...........................................................................I hope :)

Hi and welcome,

as one of the afflicted i.e. creaks and rattles and an ex Golf owner myself, my view is this; the Golf V was not without fault either and you unlikely to find any brand that is completely fault free on every car it builds. Also there are only one or two of us with this issue, which in my case anyway the dealer is getting resolved as quickly as they can.

My previous Golf was a 4motion TDI, so as close a match to the Yeti as a Golf can get. would take the Yeti any day, better drive handling and driver enjoyment. Oh also better equipped and less costly.

Therefore I would not worry, the Yeti is a very sound choice and one that I recommend and if you haven't driven one yet you should get a test drive booked in.

Regards,

TP

Hi and welcome

my yeti 1.2tsi se was build week 49 i have not got any of the problems with the dash or trim. I think they were all on the earlier builds and the light problem is only the bi-xenon headlights.

You do not need to be concerned over build quality issues. The SM is very well put together and a very harmonious vehicle. Class Act.

The squeeks and rattles have not materialized on mine - nothng -nada.

The HID discussions have centered around defining the question, hence a lot of discussions. The issue is now defined as a quirk rather than a problem. There is a software fix from Skoda, and even if it does not work, all you need to overcome the HID quirk is a second or two's patience in switching from "on" to "start" to let the lamps go past the initial warm-up. Alternatively, start first and then turn on the lights. Done.

I have a non-Skoda specific issue with the radios and Columbus navigation and their out-of-date (lack of?) integration with a hands free telephone. It is a general VAG issue, identical in all the VAG brands as far as I can tell. Adding a Parrot is cheaper than the VAG Blue Tooth prep and functions well.

I am happy with the build quality on my Yeti, no creaks or groans from the dash or the trim. Not bad compared to the British Leyland models of the 60s!! (The one advantage of the BL cars was that you could restock your parts bins from all the bits they left behind)

I also have a problem with the boot door, it lets out a loud creak when it is first opened. I suspect the salt has got into the hinge or the strut but will test the seal also.

I have one of the very early models and to encourage your thinking, I have had zero issues after 3000 miles. Not even a minor fault. So be assured, the build quality is high. I hope you take the plunge....you won't regret it.

Don't forget that the very nature of internet product forums are generally negative with people looking for problem solving answers and a venue to complain.

I must say though... this forum seems to be a very positive place :)

Others would scare the pants of anyone ever buying anything...

I would concur with what most people are saying above. Ours has the xenon light problem, but it is a minor annoyance and even if it proved incurable, I would still specify them again as they are so good. A friend of mine has the same problem on his Audi S3. The handbrake action is a bit stiff, and there is a very occasional dashboard creak on bad surfaces. But again as others have said, I can't think of any other marque which would be any better. The Passat CC I test-drove had dash rattles and would doubtless have the same electrical quirks as any other VAG car. However to get (non-steering) xenons on a Golf VI, you would need to go to GT spec (they are not even an option on the cheaper models) and specified to a similar level (but without the Yeti's 4WD) you would be forking out over £28k! And you would only get 1 year free assistance, not the 3 years which Skoda offer.

I've got direct experience of BMW, VW and Jaguar - not exactly budget brands - and I would say the Yeti is up with, and in some cases better than, any of them. So don't be deterred!

My findings so far are of superb build quality.

Mine certainly has no rattles at all or other wierd traits apart from the Xenon fault if the engine is started with the lights in 'Auto'. As I don't do this (unless I forgot to switch them off or for the purposes of fault diagnosis) then I'm not fussed about it. As I've said before, with all the electikery going on in the SM if that's the worst that happens then I'm more than delighted.

It may not be 'cheap' but it is great value for money when you compare the prices (and specs) with the alternatives - even or perhaps, especially, those from the VAG family.

I totally agree with the Forum, and indeed human, nature of the beast that is more common to comment more on things that go wrong than right. I'm sure that those with the rattles will get them sorted - TP is chasing his ones down as we speak!

Well Charlie Cat we have something in common here. I am a lifelong VW man having owned a few and worked as a VW salesman in a past life. I had intended to buy a new MK6 Golf for months and then along came the Yeti which really caught my eye so much so that I ordered one last Saturday.

I am not worried about build quality issues with the Yeti because the couple of squeaky / rattly cars on this forum appear to be early build models far outnumbered by those reported to be creak free. If you take a look at the VWAudi forum it is full of people fed up with rattling Volkswagen Golfs and, from experience, I have to say that silent cabins are something VW has struggled with for a little while now. This alone did not put me off the Golf though because there are plenty of owners out there with tight rattle free Golfs it is just that they don't have reason to make the issue known.

An unfortunate, if interesting thing happened to me today though; my current ten month old smart car broke down in Sainsburys car park and then along came the AA man; a very nice man he was too. I got talking to him about cars (who'd have thought it hey?) and told him that I had just ordered a new Skoda Yeti. The nice AA man congratulated me on my choice and told me that a lot of his colleagues drove Skodas because they are such tough, reliable cars. Praise indeed from the folk who have to fix them all day. He also said that in his experience Skodas were far more reliable than the equivalent VW's.
