Is this smoking to much from the exhaust

Featured Replies

Recently my MK1 octy has been smoking a bit even when at normal tempreture you can see loads of it in the rear view mirror when travelling, it seems a bit thick to me. I am also losing a bit of water but not lots and have thick mayo in my oil but have been told this is normal for the 1.6 aeh engine.

Here is the link to the issue, just want some opinions if its excessive as its mot time in 8 weeks and dont want it to fail emissions - thanks.

The car was at normal temp when this video was taken and it was around 3c outside at the time.

what engine is it? Its much thicker than my VRS

Its a 1.6 8Valve petrol engine code is AEH, Its worse when its just been started but even when its upto temp still quite thick.

hi ..is it going through any water ie header tank?

Looks more like water vapour rather than smoke. You can tell by putting something cold against the exhaust and seeing how must water condenses. Modern engines with cats kick out a fair amount of water vapour anyway but you will see from the test if it is excessive or normal water or smoke.

it is going through some not a lot though, have to top up header tank once a month, I have just let the car run for a bit and there isnt a lot of water coming out of the exhaust just drops every no and then.

That mayo crap is right down in the rocker cover aswell and there is also a slight bit on the dipstick but this is only slight

You got a problem I reckon, head gasket maybe or it needs a caning down the motorway

Its had a canning down the M6 mate, I have found though that today it was ok when it was cold but as it got upto tempreture the white smoke appeared - Will just have to keep an eye on it. Had a complete oil change on thursday and the engine was flushed at the time aswell. which is why i was a bit shocked when i saw the thick mayo on the rocker cover, cap and slight speckles on the dip stick.

you can get some mayo if you mainly do short journeys but I must admit yours looks quite bad, may be headgasket?

If thats just had an oil change then something is very wrong, head gasket maybe, if you got specks of mayo on the dipstick then thats down in the bowels of the sump, which at a guess means it's right through the system. Which ain't good tbh.

SWMBO ibiza suffer with the short journey mayo, but its never on the dipstick, just the the filler cap.

HTH

looks and sounds like headgasket mayo wouldnt build up like that 2 days after cleaning i would suggest a full engine flush first but NOT with BLEACH...................... :giggle:

Head gasket, or maybe the oil cooler if you're lucky.

Get the coolant tested for combustion gases.

Lol I never took that advise thanks to you guys, Just running bad and then noticed all this crap in the dipstick and had the engine flushed and also new oil and filter, but after 2 days its like this, oil cap full of mayo and speckles on the dipstick.

Also when its at tempreture the smoke (white) starts to happen.

Looks like i will be back at the garage tomorrow

Is this an expensive test mate, cheers

thats defo head gasket ! . oil only turns like that when water is getting in . it needs sorting and quickly . the smoke which its kicking out isnt normal either

if you flush the engine , get the head skimmed and new gasket put on , otherwise it will come back and just wasting your time

No. One way is to sniff it with an exhaust gas analyser, or I think you can get a test paper you dip it with.

It's proably the head gasket, as that would explain your poor MPG as well, but it is possible the oil coiler has an internal leak.

hi buddy i can have alook at your car if you want as i live in barrow? does look like the head is gone......

Had car scanned with a cheap code reader i got from ebay, and have the following codes under engine electronics...

01316

01247

00515

I cant find what 00515 and 01247 are as they are not in the book i got with the reader, and i cant find a link to codes on the site, if someone can let me know what these numbers mean it may shed some light on things.

Getting an emissions test done tomorrow for a fiver so will let you know what it states.

01316

01247

00515

01316: ABS Control Module

01247: Charcoal filter solenoid (sorry I don't have a link for this)

00515: Camshaft position sensor

The only one I would concern yourself with at the moment would be the camshaft fault code. There are a few folks on here that should be able to give you a more clued-up suggestion on what could be causing that.
