where to run wire ?

Featured Replies

I bought a reversing camera the other day

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/0382852.htm

It's a good bit of kit, and the monitor wedges in perfectly in the ashtray holder. However, my problem is where to route the wire from the camera (on top of the number plate) to the reversing light, without it dangling off the hatchback when it's open...any suggestions?

Through the rubber trunking between hatch and body and then down the c-post behind trim. Wont be easy but I dont see any alternative.

That's what i thought :'(

I have installed 4 extra LED downlights in the hatchback lid, which are connected to the existing boot light, and I took the cables up the C pillar, and through the rubber trunking. If you pull the trunking out at both ends, and extend it, it's dead easy to route the wires through the rubber, and then simply replace the rubber into the body at both ends.

No problem at all

Mike

Thanks, i'll give that a go next weekend, and will report back

One more thing I should mention -- it will be much, much easier to route the cable down through the hatchback itself if you unscrew and remove the ball attachment that the parcel shelf clips onto, and replace this once the cables are in place.

I'm getting excited now

I'm a bit stuck now....the camera has a positive and negative wire, which i crimp onto the + and - of the reversing light. well, i've removed the wiring clip from the reversing light, but i don't know which wire is which...i've tried holding the 2 together, without success..anyone know which is the +, and which is the -?

Hope you've got reversing sensors as well, otherwise you'll surely just get a really good view of what you are about to hit ! :o

Have you got a 12 volt multimeter?

If so, put the multimeter across the two terminals, you'll either gt +12 volts or -12 volts showing, depending on which way round the leads are. Get the +12 volts showing, then it's the lead going to the positive terminal on the multimeter that's the positive on the car.

WIth the car being CANbus based, you'll probably have to take the negative from the negative cable going to the lights, and not an earth point. I found this when doing the LED lights -- I had to utilise both wires from the boot light. Just using the positive and an earth on the car made the LED's stay on all the time.

Will have a look on ELSAWIN, see if I can find out more.

No, i haven't got a multimeter...i live out in the sticks, so rather than drive miles to get one, i thought i'd be a cheapskate, and get a freebie answer from you good guys and gals ;)

OK, here's your answer

Wiring going to nearside reversing light is black with blue stripe

Wiring going to offside reversing light is black with yellow stripe

These are the positive inputs for the reversing lights.

Negatives for the reversing lights are brown on both sides

Info taken from ElsaWin wiring diagrams for Octy 2, pages 49/16, 49/17.49/18 and 49/19

Same info for hatch and estate models

Hope this helps

You're a star  ..I've just popped out to try it, and it works great...too dark to fit it properly just now, but i'll enjoy my beer tonight ...thanks again :thumbup:

No problem, that's what Briskoda is all about! Have an extra beer for/with me tonight as well!

Good luck with the rest of the project, and please post some photos of it installed and working.

Regards

Mike

Well, all sorted now..I tried to feed the cable through the rubber trunking, but a bit too complicated for me, so i fed it from the hatch, out towards the strut

I then fed the wire down the side of the hatch, under the rubber seal, and into the rear ligt cluster

IMG_0042.jpg

I then set about fitting the monitor. I removed the ashtray from its holder, and as the monitor is powered from the cigarette lighter, i started routing the wire under the plastic housing at the bottom of the gear lever gaiter, and then up the side of the ashtray

IMG_0034.jpg

Then came the tricky bit..to feed the wire into the ashtray, i had to close the lid slightly..this then leaves a small gap at the top of /underneath the lid, through which i fed the wire. i pulled a fair bit through, to make it easier to work with...it's a simple task to return any excedss

IMG_0036.jpg

It was then just a matter of connecting up, then putting the monitor in the ashtray holder...it's a perfect fit, no need to secure it in anyway

All in all, wothwhile, and it works well, good colour picture, even at night time, and the only bit of wire now visible, is about 1" at the top of the hatch, beside the strut..i can live with that
