Main beam query

Featured Replies

Tonight for the first time since I bought the Octy - 2006 Pd140 Elegance, I used the main beam of the headlights and was rather suprised to find that while the nearside light shone directly down the road, albeit rather high, the offside beam was focused rather close to the car, below the range of the dip beam.

As the car passed its MOT without problems I am looking for confirmation from anyone with standard headlights where the main beam should be focused as mine just did not look right.

The dip beam has Phillips extra bright bulbs and is focused perfectly and give great illuniation - thats why I have never needed to use main.

Lastly can the main beam be adjusted seperately from the dip in standard headlights?

It looks like the bulb is seated incorrectly. Try removing it and refitting.

Failing that, can you get it to an MOT station and ask them to use the light box to see where the beam is?

Both beams are adjusted independently from each other, so yes its possible for one beam to be ok and the other not.

The main beam allignment is not tested as part of the MOT, only the dipped beam is.

Thanks for the replies guys

Did not know main was not tested so that would explain the pass.

Anyone know how the main is adjusted without upsetting the dip beam.

On the FL , there is a white socket headed device vaguely behind the main beams (innermost bulbs) on both sides. Screwing anti clockwise lowers the main beam without affecting the dipped beam. But, as said above such a bad alignment is more likely to be a badly fitted bulb. Best to get a friendly garage to check it out.

I had a bulb fitted the wrong way round once. The spring clip was on and to simple inspection it seemed ok but the symptom was that the main beam was useless.
