SD Card & Music

Featured Replies

Hi, helpful Skoda peeps.

I just downloaded the manual for the Bolero stereo and noted it has an SD card slot.

Now I'm really NO computer whizz........only just got the hang of getting music onto my ipod from itunes! So........

How - in an idiots guide style - do I get my music in itunes onto the SD card so it will play in my Yeti?

Thanks in advance!

Very easy:

a) You need an SD card reader (A bit like a USB) that slots into your computer.

B) Put the SD card into the reader

c) Go into your hardrive (not itunes) and find the files in your itunes library.

d) Copy whatever files you choose from your itunes library to the SD card, and you are done.

Enjoy

You can only play music if it's in MP3, WMA*, OGG & AAC formats provided they're not protected ones.

If they are protected with DRM (Digital Rights Management) then they will not play (*WMA will play even if protected).

Just copy the contents of the Itunes Music folder on to an appropriately size SDHC card via a card reader & insert it into the slot.

Note: The mix function will only mix within a folder, it will not jump all over the place like the shuffle feature on Itunes/Ipod, because it's crap.

Thanks......but all that sounds too easy :wonder:

This DRM protection - will that be on tracks I've imported from CD's and / or tracks I've purchased from itunes?

Itunesstuff will be protected, stuff you've ripped wont be UNLESS you selected the protect button when you were ripping it.

BTW a 2 Gig card will hold about 20 hours of music at a reasonable bitrate; you dont need the absolute best in a car as road & engine noise drowns out the subtle bits; I usually encode mp3PRO @98Kbps, if you dont have the PRO codec, use 128Kbps

When you get as far as playing something then the following may be useful.

If you set it up with albums each in their own folder then when an individual track is playing to get to the rest of the tracks in that folder press "Selection" at the bottom right of the screen. Then wait...and wait...and wait!.

This will take you back to the list of tracks in that particular folder. Then to go back to a list of all the folders press the icon at the very top left of the screen.

Somehow manuals and me can have difficulties, if you are the same these basics may help.

If your PC has a CD/DVD reader, you can also download CD directly to the SD card. I use a program called Nero to do all the difficult bits. I now have 6 CDs in the Bolero and another 5 CD on my SD card.

My motor is built and on it's way to the docks...

Going to buy a new SD card - will a class 6 be of any benefit (quicker access time) ? (thinking of 4gb, should be enough for me).

If the device (Bolero) is slower than Class 6 it will only run at the device speed. I haven't yet found out what speed the Bolero runs at.

Ok.....itunes stuff will be protected - great! is there a way around this? Jeez, why don't they make it easy for goodness sakes :(

I am assuming that this feature is not available on the 'stream' stereo that will be fitted to my 's' modelemoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif

I'm afraid not.. The only headunits that read SD cards are Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus. :)

Thanks anway JonAemoticon-0144-nod.gif . I'll just stick to CDs and radio then unless there is a dealer fit auxillary socket available at low cost.

The auxillary socket available on the SE and above is a 3.5mm stereo TRS socket in the "Jumbo" central arm rest

Thanks. Looks like CD and radio for me then. No arm rest or option for socket on my s model.

Anyone know what the capacity limit is for the SD cards?

I thought iTunes music no longer had DRM although videos still do.

I doubt if you need to buy a class 6 card. My HD Camcorder uses SD cards and that only recommends class 4 or above. I would have thought pretty much any card would be fine.

EDIT: according to the Bolero manual it will take SD crads up to 32GB. Aslo the 6 CD changer is supposed to play MP3s. So you can have 6 CDs full of MP3 albums plus a 32GB SD car full. That should be enough I think!

Excellent - thanks for that. 32Gb ought to last me a while. :)

Yep, a bit of software called SoundTaxi. It'll strip out any DRM from the music, it copy it into MP3 format, however you may want to import it back into Itunes, so that it will be at a constant bit rate.

Be warned it can on rare occasions muck up your sound card drivers, it did mine, but then again I'm using 64-bit drivers!;)

You can find it on the Bit T*****t system (not that I condone the use of such a thing) or do a Google search for it.

Be aware of the difference between "SD" and "SDHC" !!

SD has a max size of 2Gb.

SDHC currently goes from 4Gb to 32Gb; although there are rumours of a 64Gb version.

SD will play in SDHC slots, but SDHC WILL NOT WORK in a standard SD slot.

If it doesn't tell you what the max capacity for the player is, assume it is 2Gb.

At roughly 10 hours per Gb, a 32 Gb card will give you 320 hours!!!

The Bolero manual on the Skoda site (not Skoda UK) states

Memory card case: SD memory cards (“Secure Digital Memory

Cards”), SDHC (“Secure Digital High Capacity Card”) and MMC

(“Multimedia Cards”) measuring 32 mm x 24 mm x 2.1 mm and with

a capacity of up to 32 GB are available. The case for the memory card

is located under the display.

When they say case they mean the slot it goes in.

Also iTunes Music became DRM free in April 2009 so you probably won' tneed to convert anything if you use iTunes.
