DSG am I asking for trouble?

Featured Replies

I have decided to to chop the Fabia vRS in for an new Octy vRS T FSI DSG estate. Need the space for two hounds and the mrs :giggle:

Whilst I would have liked to have stayed with diesel I'm not really doing enough mileage to justify it, although potential DPF and DMF costs sealed the deal in the end.

As I plan on keeping the car for about 5 years am I asking for problems by getting DSG (I suffer with a dodgy left knee and DSG would make life more comfortable).

I know DSG has not really been available in the vRS for too long, so out of warranty problems are not an issue yet!

What warranties are available to help with the costs of a failed DSG control unit? Audi offer there own warranty extension, Skoda seem to offer a third party warranty

Your thoughts?

Thanks for looking

I love my DSG, buy it for what it can offer not what can go wrong. I read far more horrer stories about dervs than DSG, don't forget DSG has been around for a whole in Audi and VWs. Once your warranty is up, then maybe extended it? Why not ask to see the policy when your next in the showroom?

I have settled into the DSG having driven manuals for nearly 15 years and felt at home straight away. Never driven normal auto I have to say.

4 years into a PD140 DSG and no problems, not even a slight hicup - buy it, there is no more risk than a normal gearbox and clutch, but nothing in life is risk free

The DSG boxes have a very good reliability record.

Into my fourth year, PD140 DSG, remapped from new, 285,000kms on the clock and the box hasn't missed a beat. (knock on wood)

Over 4 years and 75000 miles with a 2.0 tdi (bought second hand) and love the dsg (including 50 mpg).

I'm waiting for my tsi VRS DSG estate to arrive too. Don't forget this has been around with that engine/box combo in the golf gti for years now

i guess i may just see the bad side, but recently had a audi a4 2.0t dsg, 6 months out of warranty and fsh and audi didnt want to know, good news is that there are a few companys that are repairing the troublesome control units, which is what got done and it works great now, out of warranty and i would deffo be wary of buying one, the new seven speeds are alot better by all accounts, and all the vag group now recommend gbox oil changes at 40k on the dsg so make sure you get this done too or this could void the warranty on it

Any names?

Hasn't that always been the case?

it might have only just come available on the skoda, but the VWs and audis have had the exact same DSG gearbox available on them for a fair while. Alot of the guys on the GTI foums are pushing out way over 350hp/330Ibft on them with no issues, one guy is pushing towards 500hp and is atill ok with it.

Thanks for the replies, I plan on keeping the car for about 4 1/2 or 5 years so don't really want the cost of failed DSG.
