Rumbling from the rear (PD VRS)

Featured Replies

My wifes car has a rumbling from the back end , seems worse around 30mph but you can hear it all the time

We changed the tyres around 18mths /15,000 miles ago to Goodyear Eagle F1's from the original Dunlops but the car has always made a noise from the back even when new but now its quite bad its done 60k and is an early 56 reg

Tyres look fine ie hardly worn and look to have worn level but i will change them for a pair of continentals sports maxx anyhow and keep them in the shed for a rainy day .

Now it sounds like wheel bearings but considering the issue with tyres on these especially Eagle F1's i'm hoping its is the tyres , but if not ......

How do you check rear wheel bearings

Are they easy to change

If its not them what else to check??

Are you sure the rear tyres didn't wear oddly near the inside edge?

Have you ever had a four wheel alignment check done on the car? If so did you have the rear camber changed to the revised settings?

I had a similar problem on my 56 plate vRS, so I fitted new tyres, got a 4 wheel alignment done to the revised settings and all has been rosy since.

The revised settings can be found here:

Cheers for that i will be getting the camber done but if the car was set to the old values wouldnt it still be in spec to the new values as they appear to allow up to 1.50 ??

Definatly no inner wear on the old tyres they had done over 35,000 miles and still had 3mm of tread on but had become misshaped

Yes it would still be in spec but at one end rather than close to centre tolerance.

My rear tyres had mis-shaped also, this is due to the camber. They had changed to a "50p" like shape near the insides. This is a common fault on this chassis, have a search on here and also seatcupra.net as Leon owners have the same problem.

Have a read of these:

My Leon has this. It's even across the tread, so I doubt the camber will help- the treadblocks get a sawtooth pattern. I think the crap cheap tyres don't help. If you run your palm over the tyres you can feel the step.

It sounds exactly like wheel bearings going.

not cheap crap tyres here though Eagle F1's , i have heard that some tyres are worse than others and the Eagles are one of those

No, *my* cheap crap tyres. :-).

I think it's better to have tyres with tread thatmostly runs around the circumference as well, as it's wear on the leading edge of the block.

Well fitted new tyres on the rear the old Goodyear's were well goosed ;)

One was below the limit and badly misshaped the other was around 3mm and also misshaped but they had worn nice and evenly so i'm not going to worry about the camber for now
