Sump bung - VERY tight! 1.9TDI

Featured Replies

Hi All

Planned to change the oil in my wifes Fabia 1.9TD Comfort today, however I only got as far as about to remove the sump bung. I didn't remove it as the bolt was VERY VERY tight!! I didn't want to risk excessive force as I was afraid of stripping the threads in the alloy sump.

Would I have been okay to risk it or does it look like a helicoil job at least or a new sump pan?

Just annoys me as the previous numpty who serviced it obviously well exceeded the 25nm of torque required to tighten the bolt.....

Thanks

Dan

You'll have to risk it at soem point. Maybe find out the cost of a sump first?

This. And have plans in place incase the car is off the road for a length of time.

buy a vacuum pump and suck the oil out. vw designed it to be done like that..

when ever we have a stripped sump plug we retap it to m16 (i think..could be 14) and fit a cap head bolt and dowty washer.. all done in situ and use a small quantity of oil to flush any bits out from tapping it

Rather than risk ruining the sump, you could drill out the plug. Once the centre metal is gone, it should release easily. As Felicia suggests a vacuum pump is good. I have used one for the last three years. I was dubious at first, but careful measuring of the oil collected shows that it is really emptying the sump (don't forget the bit in the filter housing). I got the Screwfix one and put a thinner extension pipe onto the suction pipe so that the collector can be on the ground.

take it to a garage for the oil change, then they can sort it out if there are issues with plug removal

You could try some heat on the sump first.
