00 Octavia clutch slipping

Featured Replies

how do,

my poor owl cars clutch is on its last legs and i was hoping someone can help. its 10yrs old with 159000 on the clock

its in perfect running order apart from the cluster proplems most have but with the fuse out its grand. now i need a quick fix only

for the clutch, is it a case that i need to replace the whole clutch kit or is it just something simple. there is no way im forking out loads o money !

so quik fix or second hand gearbox or whatever you think might help me keep the no money i have ?

At the bare minimum you'll need a new clutch kit. That includes the friction disc, pressure plate and release bearing, all of which will be pretty worn by 159k. You'd struggle to buy just the friction disc anyway, as the kits are so common, and not that expensive if you shop around.

If your car has a dual mass flywheel, then you might need to replace that at the same time, as they also wear over time.

The cheapest option for replacing the whole setup is to get a single mass conversion kit, which includes a clutch kit, flywheel and bolts. I built my own kit using VW parts for £213, which is pretty cheap considering it's all OE parts.

The cheapest kit I've ever seen is this one: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Skoda_Octavia_1.8_2002/p/Car-Parts/Transmission/Clutch-and-Associated-Parts/Solid-Flywheel-Conversions/?641780171&1&d6fec5338ee1006b6313844f0c64b783c1511d7e&SCON

Anyway, it's the labour that'll cost you the most. Expect quotes for 4-5hrs and £200-400 depending on where you go.

What car do you have?

cheers bodge. its a octavia 1. i bought it for €450 which is nothing and paid for itself in one job i did, so you can see why i dont want to spend much on it, its a great car, it past the doe equivilent the NCT no proplem and all i have put into it is front and rear brakes and two tyres. its a great car and i want to keep it and i found out today a Golf gearbox will fit no problem ? so i think the best thing for me would be a second hand gear box ??????????

:) Fitting a secondhand gearbox will make no difference to your car if you're trying to cure a clutch problem! What are the symptoms? Is the clutch slipping, juddering or dragging? Is gear selection a problem?

Yeah if the clutch is slipping. changing the gearbox will make zero difference!

Because the clutch assembly is bolted to the flywheel, and the flywheel is bolted to the crank, so a gearbox doesn't come with any clutch parts.

To be fair, if you're trying to keep the old girl going on a shoestring then just get the cheapest clutch kit you can (probably going to be about £50), and get a small independant garage to do the job on the cheap (£100-150). You might even get it cheaper if you shop about.

Literally the only way to fix a slipping clutch is to get the gearbox off, and replace the clutch.

Try GSF, Eurocarparts, Jorily Skoda, Ebay etc. and I'm sure you'll find a budget clutch.

It's false economy to just replace the clutch plate; most of the cost is labour. The job is DIYable as long as you can arrange support of the engine, and a helper with getting the box up and down.

You don't say, but if it's a diesel it's hardly more than run in, and the engine will keep going at 50mpg odd until the body rusts out from under it.

yeah cheers chaps, i took a look around for days and Jorily.com is the spot for everything. £89 for a clutch kit as opposed to the irish €150. thing is though i went to a couple of scrap yards and i was offerd €600 for it ! i only bought it for 450. mad ! :p i think i will keep driving it untill it dies, once its warm its grand, providing you dont try to put the boot down, i found changing gear 500 revs before you normaly would its grand, and wont slip. i know its only a matter of time but hey ! its a skoda, 10 years old, but bomb proof !

apart from the dash clocks, which is a disaster for all skoda octavias of that year, but pull the fuse 15 and sure its grand.

yep i think ill drive it till it drops ? or will i ? its a great car and runs like a dream
