HELP - Gearbox/clutch is getting worse!

Featured Replies

Morning ladies and gents,

I recently poster a topic on here relating to my gear/box clutch and was advised to change the gearbox oil and check the gear linkage - i have completed both of these but the problem still remains and is rapidly getting worse! I'm fearing a complete failure before long!

I have a 2002 Octavia VRS, 80K.

With the engine idling i can select every gear normally and easily, when driving sedately again changing gear is normally very easy however whenever the engine revs increase to about 3 - 3 1/2K it is near impossible to change up to the next gear, even when i match the engine speed exactly it is near impossible to select the gear and if i am successful it crunches into gear.

The matter appears regardless of it being hot or cold and is occurring more and more at lower revs, I'm now imaging it coming to a complete stop!

The clutch is genuine and replace only 20K earlier by what appears to be a clutch failure according to the service history, it does feel like the clutch is dragging occasionally, in that say I'm in third i press the clutch and it can be difficult to move it into neutral and whilst doing so it feels like its actually causing the car to brake and then impossible to move into forth or down to 2nd.

Any ideas what i should do next? Am i going to require a new box/clutch? How expensive am i talking?

Any help/advice gratefully received.

Is the clutch actually clearing properly? It's not unknown for a clutch replacement to cause extra loads and hence wear on the slave cylinder.

How would i check its clearing properly?

The clutch works properly at lower revs and in first selecting gears i.e 1st and reverse.

The symptoms you describe suggest clutch drag under load. It'll be obvious to a real mechanic if that's the problem following a quick test drive.
