Pickup

Featured Replies

well lads iam headin to look at a new pickup what should i look out for and check

they rust up really bad around the rear wheel arches

Front suspension struts with rusted cups which can fail and give you a bit of a turn when the spring drops!

And if it's had the dreaded cold start problem, then an overworked starter can sound awful and be due for a change.

Good luck with it.

Hi, while Im set on a fabia for my 1st car, I have realised that im better off waiting till march so that I dont loose a year of NCB from my bike policy.

But it has emerged that a distant relative of mine is selling her Skoda pickup. They are quite a cool car, although not sure how cool non car/non skoda people will think it is.

Afew questions about this model: what is the proper name of this model? Some places say its the felicia fun, some the skoda fun and some just simply skoda pick up. I cant seem to find an option for this model on the ecar insurance website.

How are they on insurance? Currently I find the 1.4 8v classic fabia and 1.9 SDi pretty much the cheapest car to insure for me.

I know with the pickup there is a 1.3, a 1.6 and a 1.9 diesel. Is the diesel an SDi? Or is it turbo. As if it was SDi it would be cheap to insure right? How does insurance compare with other standard bodied felicias?

The one my relative has for sale, I dont know what engine it has all i know is that its the yellow one. Would it be a hassle free car to own like a decent fabia would be? Or would I be frequently having problems with it, and will the cab leak water.

If anyone can point me to a good information source as so far ive found fairly basic info on this model. Any help much appreciated, either way ill definately be getting a skoda of some sort come march.

The "yellow" one, if it has the funky slide top and all the trim Etc. (as opposed to a pickup which has simply been sprayed yellow!) is the Fun, and they were limited in number so are not too common.

The pickup is a felicia-derived vehicle which was available as a pickup, or as the Cube Van when it had the top fitted and two rear doors rather than a tailgate.

Your insurance broker will find it eventually, mine struggled when I first insured it. They need to look at felicia first and take it from there.

The 1.9D isn't a turbo engine, just a straight diesel. The 1.3 petrol hasn't got much guts if you put anything in the tub, I can't answer for the 1.6 having never driven one.

buy the fun and have some fun!

Andy

Ok thanks allot for the info. Cleared up all my questions. I believe it is the fun then as my mum described it as quite a nice looking thing with yellow seats and a hard top cab. I hope it isnt the 1.6 as that would be pretty damn pricey for me to insure.

Im hoping its the 1.3. Ill get on to me mum to find out the full details. I think Skoda should make another one of these types of things, im sure modifying the current fabia into a similar setup would prove popular and attract the sort of people that buy fiat 500s and minis.

1.6 is only 75 bhp so it should not be too bad, and I'm preety sure the fun only came in the 1.6.

Look for rust as they are getting on a bit in age and cills etc start to go.

Well a 1.6 would be great, apart from im 19, 20 in june. And I have an SP30 I got back in oct 2006 on a 50cc scooter and one LC20 from july 2007 for giving my mum a backie to the shops!

But I will of had my full license 2 years in april. And I will have aquired 3 years NCB in march.

As you can imagine Ive had some pretty steep quotes in the past and this is the reason ive not took the plunge on a car since passing my test, but I have had quotes recently for 1.4 fabia for around £1000. I imagine I would be looking at atleast £1500 for a 1.6 of any kind.

the felicia fun pickups were only made with a 1.6 engine.. i may be interested in buying if it were for sale

how long is a piece of string type question really , i have seen tham as low as £400 on ebay then again i have seen some still fetch £1200 or more,, just how practical are they as an occasional 4 seater ??

Oh right i was hopein she would be worth more around the 2 grand mark, she has the truck man top and is in good condition for her year much better than the one currently on ebay but thanks for your thoughts. Where do you think is the best place to advertise her for sale.

Ok quick update.

Ive found out that it is indeed a 1.6 FUN, I think a 2000 or 2001 model. It has done 90,000 miles, runs and starts fine but aparrently needs some TLC. As to what that entails I dont know, but I dont really see how I can go wrong if its mechanically sound. And parts are pretty cheap and plentiful as its just felicia stuff right?

Perhaps its just a little ruff around the edges and a little clean up is all thats neccesary. And heres the cool part, as I am family she said I can have it for only a good will gesture of money like £100. Only problem is insurance, on quotes for a normal 1.6 GLxi im looking at £1567. I have emailed them to get them to list the pickup and fun models or atleast instruct me on how to get a quote for these models with them. But it is £567 more to insure than a 1.4 fabia, although if I was getting a fabia I would be looking at £1000 for the car itself and then £1000 to insure or something very near that. With the Fun im still saving money, but is that a big enough saving to make it worth while. I know that the fun may turn out to be a smart investment though, im sure a nice set of alloys, a service and a good clean would probably let me sell it for more than what I paid in a few years. And I also did an insurance quote with them just to test the water on how big a difference it makes if I have had my license for 2 years (will have this april) and the 1.6 glxi came to £1268. Now at that sort of saving I wouldnt hesitate as I would have a cool car and insurance for no more than £1370 in total.

What would you guys do? Any of you have experience with FUN insurance and is it likely that the FUN will be allot more to insure than a standard felicia 1.6?.

i would try on here then or maybe autotrader..the ebay one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190367992236&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT went for 1200 quid and had a stack of miles on it but i cant see even a good one thats 10 yr old fetching 2k except against a new car...ebay one..

my friend was looking for one about a month ago couldnt find any for sale, he searched ebay, pistonheads, autotrader all with full nationwide searches as he desperately wanted one, seems if there in such demand you'd think they'd be worth more!!!!

trouble is there are not many tidy ones about, dont forget the newest one is going to be 9 years old.its not demant its just there arn't many here to start with. they tend to rust along the rear sills and strut tops and there are a lot of them used as work horses which tend to be kept till they are dead.. i do fancy one myself as i tend to use my octavia as a van most of the time so would save knocking it about but still have the use of 4 seat when needed, not seen one for sale for 2K anywhere for a long time (or at least actually sold for 2K)

Ok guys, ecar insurance have got back to me about adding the Felicia Fun to their model list, tell me If this information I have written is correct. Alos anyone know when the Fun went into production and what year they go upto?, would be helpful.

Make: Skoda

Model:Felicia Fun

Year: 2000

Fuel Type: Petrol

Transmission: Manual

Detailed Model Type: Skoda Felicia Fun

Body Style: (what should I put here?) Truck? Pickup? light utility vehicle?

No. Doors: 2

No. seats: 4

Imported From (if imported):

EXACT Engine cc: 1598cc

i would think the body type has to be pickup, will it not find it by the reg no then? everyone else must be able to insure theire easy enough

just put my felicia fun pickup into local dealer under the scrappage scheme lovely car full service history 57000 miles with truckman top two owners fron new. really sorry

to let it go.they were only built for 2 years from 1998 to 2000.for insurance purposes they are classed as a commercial vehicle so they are more expensive to insure.they all had 1.6 injected petrol engines.by the way also traded in my better half's 54 plate octavia l&k estate and bought a yeti 2.o 4x4 170bhp nice car.

i had real trouble insuring my pickup (not a fun, just a boggo pickup) i tried about 20 different insurance companies and they couldn't find the details of it from the reg number, in the end i had to get a commercial van policy for social and domestic only... what a nightmare :dull:

yep they got back to me and said that it can be insured through their commercial vehicle section Evan insurance, not looking good for me as it comes to £1868.61. I might try and see what it comes to if I get put on as a named driver on my dads policy, but I find it unlikely to get much cheaper. Looks like a fabia for me after all.

  • 1 month later...

have you tried using a comparison website like confused.com? i've just bought a skoda cube and i managed to get quotes of just over £200. im 26 and have 3 years ncb, although I have another car which has 9 years ncb on it, so im not sure if that effects my quotes or not.
