Engine swap. Toying with this idea

Featured Replies

I have a RS but as we all notice after 4 maybe 5 years want more power. How easy is it to swap the engine for the 225 bam engine. I'm thinking I could then use the engine out of the RS for my Mk1 Golf.

So how hard to swap engine. Do I need to change anything else. Does the swap take long as the RS is my main form of transport.

Thanks

I am sure there will be more answers to this, but I think the swap is reasonably straight forward as same engine on the out side. You will need a diferent down pipe to the K04 turbo (if you have the full engine). Think the throttle is on the other side of the inlet manifold so you will need to route piping differently to intercooler or get a FMIC. (It will need one anyway for the extra power)

You will need to remap the ECU to customise the settings for the BAM engine, or may need the BAM ECU.

The MAF needs to be the 3" one for the K04 turbo and assoiciated pipiing to air box.

not quite plug and play, a few looms need to be extended and the k04 has a temperature sensor that needs to be plumbed in or that will leave a fault in the memory, mine took two days to get the car physically moving, but then another few days playing with settings and tidying it up, i used the standard loom too albeit mine was a normal 1.8t not vrs, any questions mate just ask, and there are a few pics in my blog,

Sounds all good. So I'll have to start saving and keeping my eye open for a low milage Bam

I'm selling an IHI set up that would bolt straight on over the course of say a weekend, this would be good for 300bhp and ok on standard internals if you don't run excessive boost. You'd need to sort out a remap thereafter...

No point, just get new rods/pistons and a bigger turbo.

I am thinking Of a fresher engine in the Octavia, might as well put in a bam when changing it. And the engine I take out will re refreshed and placed in my golf. Fun all round.

Double post, Sorry!

Is the car currently standard? You would find a remapped AUQ is not far off a standard BAM. Would be around 25bhp gained. If you think of doing more though this would become irrelevent as you would need to dump the K04 or K03s anyway.

I assume you have checked with the insurance company as this may be a bit of an eye opener . They either won't cover the car after the engine change or charge the earth.

A remap alone almost doubled mine when I was with Tesco, wouldn't even want to think what they would have wanted for an engine swap.
