im currently in the process of specing a new 2.0T VRS up for sept delivery ........ i know it early but over the next few months, moving house and girlfriend having a baby so thought get most important thing sorted first ........ but dont tell me girlfriend, doctors or house agents .....

i went to my "not so helpfull" dealer and was going thought colour, spec, options , accessories and then he popped up with, if i was you id get your order in now and have it before april 1st 2010 as tax is going up a lot ........................

now i wasnt sure if this was a sales speech for pushing me now to buy, but when i got back i went on to the DVLA website and comparing emmisions and prices the 2.0T vrs is going from £175 up to £290 (the DSG even more so bang goes that gearbox ....)

i only do 8-10k a year so cant see any point of a diesel but there was hardley any change on that car tax .....

does any one know whats going on ............

Below is the VED rates for new cars bought in 2010-11, the so-called 'showroom tax'. These are the rates you will pay in the first year of ownership.

In the second year VED road tax rates will revert to the regular rate for that vehicle.

First-year VED rates in 2010-11

Band A (up to 100g/km CO2) no fee

Band B (101-110g/km CO2) no fee

Band C (111-120g/km CO2) no fee

Band D (121-130g/km CO2) no fee

Band E (131-140g/km CO2) £110

Please note these charges apply to cars registered after March 1, 2001. Vehicles registered before this date are taxed according to their engine size. From April 2009 cars with engines under 1549cc will pay £125 a year, and cars with engines over 1549cc will pay £190 a year.

whatcar hey ;)

This is the new 1st year rate, £250 for manual and £300 for DSG. In year 2 it then goes back to the normal tax rates.

Trying to price a car for Sept will not be very precise. You do not know what promotions Skoda will have on, will a change of government have changed VAT, etc

Hope you meant band H. ;)

Well that reads £425 for the first year in band j , this i daft , the price is for the year 10/11 so sept should be the same

From April 2010 anyone buying a new car will pay a different rate of Vehicle Tax for the first tax disc. From the second tax disc onwards they will then pay the standard rate. This will send a stronger signal to the buyer about the environmental implications of their car purchase and will only apply to new cars, not already registered cars.

The stronger signal it sends to me is that we are governed by imbeciles. Anyone normal sending a message would keep it simple and to the point. Instead we have hugely complex, unpredictable costs that can benifit very few except the odd accountant.

Anyone like me who needs a decent road going tractor (the Disco) plus a reasonably efficient car (the Octy) that can carry sensible loads will presumably have ended up juggling figures on spreadsheets trying to find what the cost implications of various scenarios will be. Previously this led to me having to run 2 polluting cars and leave the Fiesta in the path SORNed. How stupid.

Why they can't be honest and just add straight tax to fuel instead of all this smoke and mirrors is just beyond me. All the current taxes do is encourage people who should be walking or biking to pollute with a tiny, relatively useless car.

The stronger signal it sends to me is that we are governed by imbeciles. Anyone normal sending a message would keep it simple and to the point. Instead we have hugely complex, unpredictable costs that can benifit very few except the odd accountant.

The real signal it sends is that there is no limit to the ways that this government can increase taxation on the motorist in the name of "environmental issues"

And, just what will this additional income be used for - I guess, just to prop up some other area where the tax payers(our) money has been squandered. :( :(

Surely the best way to tax us car users is to scrap road tax and lump it onto fuel duty.

Then people who rarely use their cars (not me, 30k per year), or have very efficient cars will pay less tax (they are, after all, not wearing out the roads etc.) Then the people with gas guzzlers or who do a lot of driving will pay for the roads that they are using.

I know that fuel will prob end up at £1.50+ a litre but make far more sense and seems far fairer to those who don't drive a huge amount (and might make people think about using their cars if they're paying for it at point of use.)

Maybe the graspings b******S are planning on £150 a litre anyway and will still keep the tax , i only did 4k in my vrs last year and paid the same tax as people averaging 3 times that , so yes that seems a fairer system .

No sorry, can't agree here. Yes it's OK in principle but what about those people who have no choice but to use their cars . The PM and his friends constantly tell us about buses and the like but there are some that can't (and won't). I suppose they could be exempt from the fuel tax but that would cause a riot, wouldn't it....
