So, Arafat's finally departed

Featured Replies

I see that Arafat has finally gone. What do the assembled folks think? Was he a freedom fighter, or a terrorist? What will happen in Israel now? He has a government, but no real successor. It'll either mean that, without him, they'll be able to sort it out at last -or will the whole area blow up now?

It's all the fault of the British, according to many people. We pulled out of Palestine after the war, and allowed the Zionists to establish Israel. In reality, it's much more complicated than that.

Oops! Wrong Forum! I can't see a way to move or delete it. Could a kindly mod oblige, please?

We seem to have posted similar posts at the same time - scary

I may be a tad controversial here but I personally think that the existence of the state of Isreal threatens our civilization and our world. Basically when you look at it, due to a feeling of collective guilt about how Jews were treated by the Nazi's the West, and in particular Britain and the USA let a load of Europeans move into Palestine and displace the native arab population. Those arabs that have remained are very poorly treated, and the rest of the arab world is prevented from doing anything about it by a combination of western military technology given to Isreal and the threat of America's military muscle.

The best solution to the problems of the middle eats and the world would be for the West (especially USA) to pull the plug on Isreal and remove the Jewish population from Palestine.

Please do not even bother to say Isreal is the ancestral home land of the Jews. In that case Germany and Denmark is the ancestral homeland of the English, some where in central Europe the homeland of the Irish, Scots and Welsh (Celts), the British Isle are the ancestral homeland of the Americans. Non of that would justify those people claiming those lands and displacing the current populations! The Jews left Palestine, and lived for centuaries in Europe. They have no legitimate claim.

Nice to see you not being controversial, like you usualy are William :D

Jonno(keeping out of this one now)

For once Bill, you are talking a bit of sense. (not all of it, but in part). Pulling the plug on Israel is just a wrong as what happened in Palestine after WW2, but taking a tougher stance against Israel by both the British and American forces would be the right thing to do. The United Nations has a human rights chater and IIRC there are only the US and Israel have not ratified it.

These two also constantly defend each other in other UN resolutions as well.

Israel is wrong in their treatment of the Palistinans on the west bank and gaza ond America/Britain are wrong in supporting them in the lengths that they do.

And they wonder why resentment of the west is growing.
